tyre tube identity crisis

ive accummulated a lot of tyres and tubes that i use for bikes i sell

i'll talk about tubes for hybrid & mountain bike 26" wheels for now

is there any easy way to tell which tube fits a particular tyre width if the sizes aren't marked on tubes?

i like to match them, 195 to 195 tyres etc

when i do 175s/150s for hybrids... this gets the most confusing

oh yeah, i've got 215 marked tube widths, but no tyres to fit that size that i can find, would that matter fitted to 195 tyres?

Compare them to a tube with markings.

As long as they match the tire size fairly closely they will work fine. Even 27 inch and 700C tubes are generally interchangeable. Smaller tubes will stretch more and larger ones less to fill the tire, but within reason they do not need to match exactly. Unless OCD demands it.

Even brand new inner tubes are rated for a range of tire sizes. An inner tube that is a bit too big or a bit too small will fit a given tire size. You do not need to have an exact fit

thx guys. that'll make tube selections.. simplified

Even 27 inch and 700C tubes are generally interchangeable.

i read somewhere 700c tubes will fit 27"ers, and wondered if 27" tubes will fit 700c'ers, that clears that!

If it fits, it fits.

A tubes unstretched diameter will be about 2/3s the folded flat width. So if a tube is 2" across it's a close fit for a tire with an inside width of 1.33". Leave room for error and the tire's wall thickness, and you'll be able to eyeball a flat tube and know what tire it's for. (obviously, it'll stretch for a wider tire, but I don't like to stretch them too far if I have a closer fitting tube handy).
