New cassette after 2000 miles?
This was a new Specialized road bike - took it in for service - they said it needed a new chain and that could cause the cassette to wear. Now they say I need one due to the loose chain. Does this sound right or I am I being taken on a different kind of ride? These guys tend to want to do tons of work on bikes. Thanks

Did you maintain your chain properly during its life (cleaning, lubing, etc.)? Seems a little excessive to me.
Also, what does your teeth look like? If they look like waves, they should be replaced.
I would bring my bike somewhere else going forward...

Does the new chain skip on the old cassette? It should not but if that is what they mean by a "loose chain" then it needs to be replaced. How it could wear that much in that distance is beyond me even if it was never lubed.

Since a new chain on a worn cassette can skip, shops recommend changing the cassette as well
to avoid call-backs and unhappy customers (you fixed my bike and now it skips!).
If the shop used a chain checking gauge, it may not actually be that worn- those are notoriously unreliable and 2k is low for the chain to need replacement.
I would not replace the cassette, and would measure the chain with a ruler before even replacing that.

I've worn out a chain in less than 2000 miles. Agree with woodcraft, the shop may be acting conservatively rather than maliciously.
If you want to wring every last mile out of your drivetrain, you'll have to take its maintenance into your own hands.

As a former bike store owner, I know about bike stores that bilk their customers. True story; the guy that I sold one of my stores to in Solana Beach was ripping people off left and right/ --whenever possible. It's like where I luive now there is this "Big O Car Tire" place. My wife took our truck in for one new tire: they said the shocks were shot, it needed new muffler bearings etc.. it'll be about $1,500. You have to really look out for yourself.

The guy whose locker is next to mine at work wore out his entire drivetrain because he lubed it exactly once over a year of commuting 12 miles nearly every day rain or shine, so yeah if you have done zero maintenance on it, could be legit.

Post a pic of your cassette (clean preferably) and we could tell you.
But you'd have a heck of a skillset killing a modern cassette in 2,000 miles so off the cuff I'd guess, no.
