Bikes on Amtrak's Pennsylvanian
Sweet!:

And it's a nice train ride that includes the famous Horseshoe Curve.

I'm surprised that more people here haven't chimed in on this.
This makes using Amtrak to get the GAP and the C & O Canal more convenient for those of us coming out of NYC and Philly.
Go straight to Pittsburgh, at a more reasonable arrival time, to start cycling down to DC and then board Amtrak there to get back home.
Maybe this should have been posted in the Northeast Regional Discussion forum?

You can now do a "loop." Pennsylvanian from NYC/PHL to PGH. Ride the GAP and C&0 to D.C. then catch the Vermonter, which has roll-on bike service, back north.
I live in Philly. The first time I rode across PA back home I had to rent a car to get to PGH. Not anymore. I actually went to law school in PGH. I remember when the train had checked baggage service. Took my bike back and forth a couple of times.

I have just done this loop. I took the night NE Regional from NYC to DC on Oct 13 and Pennsylvanian back from Pittsburgh to NYC on Oct 20. Was about to post about the bikes on Pennsylvanian when I found this thread.
Mind that the baggage check in PGH closes 45 minutes prior to the train departure, and it is advisable to arrive early to get the bike tag. I did not get one and just stuck my printed ticket into the bike.

"Customers checking their bikes (no box required) must arrive at the station 45 minutes prior to the train departure to allow time to purchase a ticket and obtain a baggage tag and transport the bike to the baggage car."
