Alternate style locknuts?

I've used a threaded-to-threadless stem converter during my rebuild of this '99 Cannondale. Do they make locknuts for threaded headsets in a style that would make the transition from it to the threadless stem look more smooth? I know it would still need to have the wrench flats but maybe not a rounded top? I dunno, it's an aesthetic long shot, but I thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone knew?
(Yes I am aware of the gap, I am in search of the right sized spacer).

I don't think so. A rubber O ring might frill the gap and make it look a bit smoother.

Maybe something like Campy Athena?

(...Although after rereading the initial post this is probably not what you had in mind.)

There are a number of different headsets.

You could try the wavy nuts on some of the older Shimano headsets (EX/AX)

A number of older headsets with a grooved washer had a hand tightened knurled lower lock nut.

This is listed as a Stronglight P3

Hmmm, were there other headsets that took a pin wrench?

I'm seeing what is listed as a Shimano AX Headset Cover. I can't say if that work best with an AX (or EX) headset.

Several of the Campagnolo headsets had a square nut. Perhaps not as distinctive as the typical 6-point nuts.

It looks like Velo Orange has a similar style, 2 flats on the bottom, 4 flats on the top.

Ahh, I think I found it. My Shimano AX bike appears to have a Tange Aero Levin AR-202 headset with a cone shaped top nut.

I thought Stronglight may have had some more esoteric headsets, perhaps used on some of the early aluminum bikes.

You could try and bevel the bottom of the stem to sit down over the bevel of the locknut. I assume you are trying to cover up or lessen the transition that by nature sticks out because of the mismatch this exhibits.

You could also find thinwall pipe to make a sleeve out of to cover up all the flats and washers by trapping it under the stem.

Cinelli headset. It will cost you a fortune.

This particular Magistroni may fit the bill. Although I will probably be bidding against you. Never seen one like it before, I have the urge to own it.

This is probably the cheapest and easiest solution.

One of the MAVIC 31x series headsets would probably look OK in this application. Alternately, you could thread an appropriate sized piece of tubing and install a set screw as the locking device.

Hiding that transition is pretty tough. I use a few adapters but I use them to get me more upright than a regular stem, I never really like Technomic stems, and trying to hide that long thin quill is hard. I tried using a piece of rubber hose to at least make it look a bit fatter.

In your case a black headset might help.

I used the black HS on this bike because the components were to be black. The hose over the adapter makes it look a bit less obvious but maybe it needs a little something between the end of the hose and upper cup of the HS.

Since my main goal was to sit upright I ended up with this Kalloy hybrid stem that is just a smoother look all around.

Seems like a good use for the Innicycle conversion headset.

Thread on it here: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...headset-2.html

Deep search and patience on ebay for an ally Delta head nut. Field serviceable - no wrench flats are needed. Just set your preload by hand, then the top nut by hand and lock by a tiny Allen set / grub screw.
