Your Weekend Ride Reports -- October 19/20

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do you still have decent cycling weather or have you moved to indoor sports? Tell us all about it! And if you've got autumn cycling photos, let's see them.

Today was was basically a shake down ride for a new build. Did about 50kms from the city to coast and back. Did some adjusting to the bike worked out what changes it needs but turned out to be a great ride on a nice day.

Been doing a lot of jogging since August so I've been off the bike. Rode my 29er MTB on 20 miles of gravel and 12 miles of pavement. Felt good to be back in the saddle!

Finally made it out on a weekend ride! Just a short/solo ride: 22.8 miles, 1,440'. It was an overcast but pretty pleasant day in North Carolina: 60F, with plenty of leaves still on the trees.

I've been commuting 90-100 miles a week, and the job has left me pretty zonked when the weekend rolls around. It was quite nice to ride my road bike without a bag and a bunch of stuff on my back.

No cycling this past weekend ... but we did do something cycling-related. We drove (I drove, Rowan navigated) two routes for upcoming cycling events.

Both are 200 km long.
One is relatively flat with about 2600 metres of climbing.
The other is a bit hilly with about 4500 metres of climbing.

Took most of last week off, feeling puny. Made up for it with four consecutive days of riding Thursday-Sunday. Typical Texas weather, can't decide whether it's summer or winter usually both the same day -- like in the 30s last weekend morning, then 70s by noon. I've skipped most early morning rides, waiting for the warmer afternoons.

Thursday -- 42 miles including group ride. Well, group of two.
Friday -- 18 miles, mostly test ride sorting out a sluggish freehub on an older aero wheelset.
Saturday -- 25 miles that night, more wheel adjustments, more testing.
Sunday -- another 25 miles that afternoon. Warm and hefty wind, 17 mph with gusts to 29 mph. Good day to try for some tailwind PRs but my legs were kinda dead after three rides without rest. Faster than usual but no new Strava tokens. Some climbs into headwinds were grueling but I need the workout. My climbing has gradually improved from middle of the pack on Strava segments to the upper third, a huge improvement for me. I was dead last on every local Strava climbing segment in 2015. I don't think I'm really much stronger, but I've lost 25 lbs since 2015 so I'm lugging less lard uphill.

Hanging with folks by one of two fires.

Sunrise
Did an organized tour. About 55 miles total because I took a shortcut on Sunday to beat the rain. Camped at a beautiful farm.

Both days saw me waking up to the weather reporting "currently raining, but it'll stop in an hour." After waiting an hour, it was still raining, but the weatherman was saying "it'll stop in an hour."

After 4 hours of waiting (both days), I hopped on Zwift for interval work on Saturday, then 2 hours of Z2 on Sunday. Naturally, the sun came out and dried everything up as soon as I was 20 minutes into my indoor rides.

76 miles over to Castroville and back. About 2k climbing. About 58 when I left around 8:45 and 77 when I got back around 2:15. Saw a lot more cyclists than I usually see on these same roads so guess it was a good day for riding.

Thursday evening did the Davis Is. ride for 27 miles. Tampa kind of sucks right now. The whole city is one large construction zone. I have to play dodgem' with dump trucks most of the time. Saturday TS Nestor was passing close enough that there was a good amount of rain and wind during the day, so no bike rides. Sunday I went over to Philippe Park and back on the Courtney Campbell trail. The trail is right next to the bay and was full of debris from the storm. 42 miles total.
