Long Island: Good Ride Today?

Odd unfamiliar yellow object in the sky this evening. Got on the bike for a better look.
Tower Loop and Blue Dot trails pretty dry but littered with blowdown. I spent a lot of time kicking wood aside.

Got out at the crack of noon for 32 on the road. Headwind coming home, ugh. Still playing with and discovering the quirks of the Garmin. I've learned that when it suddenly instructs to make a U-turn, don't. It will gather it's limited wits within 100 yards or so. Usually.
I disagree with your assessment of this dank and dreary winter. Give me 10F and dry and clear any day.

It’s been a really mild winter but has rained a lot. Last Wed., Thurs., Friday, Monday and yesterday, etc.....beats snow though. Likely to be great mt, biking this weekend.

It totally sucks at generating a route on it's own. I'd only depend on it for that as a last resort.
Some of the Points of Interest loaded into the database are so bizarre as to seem to be a joke. Under "lodging" I get, among others, an Uncle Prem" and an "Uncle Ram" located somewhere in the wilds of Queens. I remember it touting a "Ghassem's Auto Painting" IIRC, also in Queens, as a POI of interest to a cyclist. I haven't ridden there yet.
See ya in the woods.

"It got confused at 2 places where the outgoing routing met with the return route. When I continued straight ahead because I knew where I was going, it got back on track after about 100 yards. "
Yes, I've had that happen. The device knows where you are but cannot initially figure out what direction you are going and it knows it needs to direct you in BOTH direction, so gets confused till you've moved that 100 yards, then it figures it out. Somewhat understandable and is like driving with my wife.

Agree and it's a problem with all devices. They just don't have the computing power to generate a bike friendly course internally. I don't think Garmin (or anybody) puts any effort into doing advanced calculating of bike routes that are useful. They can do it for cars, just not bikes. In theory, a Garmin can use the database called "Popularity Routing" where it sees routes that other cyclists have ridden and uploaded to the Garmin Connect system. Seems pretty hit and miss and I've never tried it.
I tend to generate my own routes either on the Garmin Connect website, or RideWithGPS, then download to the device. I've done this a lot for rides I've done in the Wading River area. Helps me when I'm unsure of the turns. I have also used routes generated by others, then re-drawn those onto my own route and downloaded.

Finally, a nice clear morning! Trails in B P park in great shape, the usual frozen ruts up north. Got a flat 100 yards from the finish. Decided not to deal with it till home. I squirted another 20cc of Orange Seal into the year-old sealant and it appears to be holding fine.

Another all too rare nice morning for the MTB thing. I rode up the GreenBelt into Stilwell, then CRAWLED back at painfully low speed looking for dropped phone. I did find it.....in the car.

Youngest had a birthday party to attend so I took the two older ones to Stillwell to ride, did two different sections, one down to the railroad tracks and most of the yellow and white trail. The kids like to give me a hard time that I'm old but this "old guy" didn't have to walk the hills.

When we got there around 1 there was still ice on the puddle by the entrance. Most of the trails were still solid but there were a few places that should have been avoided.

Sure signs of spring........
lots of birdsong in the morning
first 100 mile week of 2020
best of all, first tandem ride! only 32 miles but a good 32
Although I do wish it would snow just a bit so I can do a proper winter camp.

.....Doesn't help I'm having a hard time getting over a bout of pneumonia from a cold and sinus infection. Haven't ridden in 3 weeks and doubt I'll get out this weekend. At least my blood counts show it's not a flair up of my Chronic Leukemia, all good on that, thank God. All in the head though, the head cold too. Looking forward to a warmish day just to get a spin on the road bike.
Only could fit in 16 miles today.......but......SHORTS! oh yes.
And a bit off the road tonight to check out that moon.

Today was just hot.
I headed out wearing a sleeveless base, light long sleeve and a short sleeve jersey. Half way out I had to remove the long sleeve layer. I drank more water than usual for March.
52 miles with temps reaching 65*.

Thx Joe, yes feeling better, have been out 3 times, including today. And as Glenn state it was warm, but was windy so stayed comfortable. Supposed to be warmer all week, hope to get out again before the weekend.

Didn't do more then a riding the kids back and forth to school; unfortunately one after the other came down with a minor viral infection that left me home taking care of them but today was decent, everyone healthy and we did 11 miles down to Jones Beach.

Kaos X 2! We rode the yellow tandem to Cold Spring Harbor intending to have lunch at the Gourmet Whaler, only to find it closed for renovations until mid April. By then we will all be under house arrest.
That middle mile or so of the MUP (that was never resurfaced when the rest of it was done) is getting worse and worse.

We did a really nice mt. bike roll thru Edgewood at 9. Did nothing hard as I’m out of shape, yellow and white trails only which was plenty at 10 miles. The parking lot was packed on return. Conditions were perfect and it was cold in the woods at 37.

Did a coast to coast for the 12st tie this year. Massapequa to Oyster Bay to Tobay to home.
This completed a 200 mile week.

Talk about chaos, it was just that on the BP path this afternoon. I don't know how half these people make it to adulthood given all the ways for the clueless to get themselves offed. The winners, setting the bar high, were the 4 people walking abreast, completely blocking the path, even without the help of the barely under control Great Dane they were walking. The dog had spotted a bunny and was about to drag its owner into the brush.

Two dog walkers int he middle with extra long leashes.
The Jones Beach boardwalk was almost shoulder to shoulder. IT was so crowded that I decided to sit somewhere else while having a snack.
I stayed off the BP trail after seeing how crowded it was yesterday. It's safer on the streets.
