quill headset, enough thread to be safe?
hi
i added a basket mount to the headset. so theres less thread now. is there still enough thread for the lock nut?
before basket mount, there is 7 threads...
after adding basket mount, theres only 5 threads...
everything tightened down...
* the basket mount is underneath, so you can't see it in the last photo. but its there.

Is that a cable stop bracket for center pull breaks above the basket mount? Are you drilling through the basket mount for the cable adjuster and cable to pass through. You could eliminate the cable stop bracket and just mount the adjuster in the basket mount to gain back thread height.

^ this. Remove the unneeded brake hardware. And also, clean up the headset corrosion? Mild acid bath and an oil rub?

While I agree with the others advice to remove one of the spacers/brackets that is not being used (but for spacing) I will add that 5 threads will likely be enough anyway. I also agree with the horrible condition of the headset's outsides. I hope that is no reflection of the insides' condition... Andy

It is possible that removing the (thicker) brake hardware "spacer" would expose enough threads such that the lock nut bottoms out on its own neck before providing enough preload on the bearing. Watch for this if you try this route.
I do think the five exposed threads is plenty for that top lock nut. It's really just providing the preload on the bearing. Yes, it's an important part of the headset, but it needs only stay tight once you have tightened it...those five threads should be enough for that in my opinion.
