Well, I'm off to a great start. I started getting sick Friday on the way home from work....... Flu like symptoms..... gggrrreeeaaatttt.............. Sicker than a dog Friday night and most of Saturday but starting to feel better Sunday. Still a little weak yesterday morning so I called off work. Because of our company's Covid policy I have to get tested before I can go back to work. By the time I got in to the doctor yesterday to get the Covid I felt great. Today I feel fantastic but now I'm "in quarantine" until the test results get back, hopefully by tomorrow. And of course, the last 4 days we have had PERFECT riding weather and here I am with a bike ready to roll and I can't go anywhere. My wife even just got on me that I need to get out and ride more!

72 hours with no fever, still no cough or sore throat that's a good sign. Should have the test results sometime in the morning.

GCN challenge, ride a £ 100 bike for a 100 miles
Looks like GCN is getting into the act too of why everyone should love a cheap bike

Hey guys, first time participant in this. As I have only managed 5 posts in 13 years of membership, my pics will have to wait for a later more comprehensive post. I haven't been an active user, lol.
Right now I'm $50 into the budget on a trashheap of a Worksman folder. I could never pass up a Worksman. I have rebuilt the headset, bottom bracket and coaster brake, and it has a new chain (gold of course). I might change the rear cog for a gearing faster than a walking pace. I'm thinking the remaining $50 might go into blue BMX skinwalls or bar tape.
Present goal is to do the 60km in one ride. We'll see how that goes.
Edit- That Haro on the first page is amazingly cool.

I can't stop myself - I am also in again...and this year I stumbled onto a 1982 Bridgestone Regulus for $60:
I note that there is something missing... I will be adding some trekking bars that I found at the co-op ($6, including bar tape), along with brake levers ($5 for the pair), Suntour thumb shifters ($3), and a Suntour 14-32 freewheel ($2). I also had to spend $11 on rust converter to address "issues" around the BB. That brings me to $87 and that is before exchange from Canadian dollars!
I have found a few of the spokes on the rear wheel are seized, and I will be replacing them with old galvanized spokes from steel wheels I recycled at the co-op. No cost to me, and I think the market value of used galvanized spokes from steel rimmed wheels from 1978 is very close to nil. I may have to replace the pedals and tires.
I will post a few pictures soon as the project progresses.

I am hoping to do a longer ride on the weekend but I have been riding every morning and am up to 36.5 km, so a third of the way there. Its been very pleasant riding in the mornings. Other than the narrow gear range the bike has been doing great.

Okay, my candidate is in hand. Original CL ad:
The seller knocked off $10, so I’m in for $70 at the moment.
Hauled it home in the Burley trailer connected to my ‘71 Raleigh Int’l:
I think it’s a 1960s model based on the chain guard and 590mm wheels, but I need to check the catalogs. Also, quite original other than pedals, seat, and brake pads. Rims are fairly rust free, and looks like it’ll need a basic overhaul. Rear rack is a nice bonus.

LOVE the chainguard on the Sprite! Looks vaguely French, especially with the top-tube mounted shifter.

Pretty obvious as to why that was known as a “suicide” shifter! Or maybe just an impaler?

Hey, I’ll send that saddle for free to any contestant who wants to give it a try!
And a little catalog searching seems to indicate that it's a 1969 model as it's just '69 and '70 that offered a 5-speed Huret shifting setup, and the '70 is listed only in coffee brown for the men's model. Here's the '69 catalog page curtesy of https://threespeedhub.com/.

I have been WAITING for this day!
Here is the sellers photo of what turned out to be a ‘79 Trek 514. Asking price: $45.00, actual cost after some expert negotiating by yours truly... $43.00.
I’ve washed it, and put a different saddle on it, and $4.98 worth of bar tape on it. I’ll see if I can find the saddle cost...
But this is my entry, and I’m excited to play!

2.6 miles under it's wheels but it seems the Soma wasn't quite as "ride ready" as I thought, this was the farthest I'd ridden it in one shot and a few ankle biters popped up. No parts needed but this weekend I'll be rebuilding the BB and hubs and getting the rear brake freed up so one side doesn't drag all the time. I should have done that anyway but the PO told me it had just been serviced "a few months ago" when I bought it. Uh huh. Tires hold air and aren't going to disintegrate under me but that's all I can say for them and the brakes do work.

You have 100 days starting today, August 11, 2020 to complete the following:
- In the spirit of public health all clunking must be done with physical distancing and safety measures. We want to see your piece of crap next year too.
- $100USD (or local equivalent) firm budget to purchase a C&V bicycle and get it back on the road. This $100 includes initial bicycle purchase and all consumables/parts to make it go again. You may have to cut corners but this is all part of the fun. That wal-mart saddle just might have to be your hatchet if you spent all your money on new tires. Your time, tools, cleaning supplies, gas/transit to go get it and grease are free. Count them if you'd like. If you are buying new or used, record that price. If you are using something you already have and know what you paid, use that price. If you can't remember, use the fair market value of the item. If in doubt, ask. Shipping is a cost to be factored in. While anyone who wishes to participate is encouraged to follow the spirit of the game and go out and get a new bicycle, an untouched project waiting in the shed is ok, too.
- Swapping one part out for another does not cancel out the value added to the bicycle. As found = purchase price. adding items costs money.
- If you sell a part you remove from the bike, you may add the sale price to your budget. You actually have to find a real buyer for your ****e to gain a few sheckles.
- Keep a detailed list and updated before, during and after pictures in this thread on your purchases and progress. We fiend for this sort of thing.
- A minimum of 100km ridden on your new bike. Take photos of the rebuild and of the bicycle in the places you go and post them here. Perhaps you'll have a newfound admiration for stem shifters and solid axles. Or maybe you'll hate everyone after five minutes on the bike and keep using Photobucket to share photos.
- Arbitrary style and value points. You'll get style points for both the nicest finds/builds AND the bikes that make us say "That thing actually survived 100km?". Going as cheap and crummy as possible is a badge of honour. Bonus points for using a real POS in as-found condition (flipped bars, rusted cables, saddle at a 45 degree angle, etc.) and preserving the integrity of the previous owner's ingenuity and mechanical skills.
Judging: Bribery and flattery is acceptable and encouraged. If anyone actually has too much free time and bribes me I will post contents of bike related packages for others to covet and oggle.

No ride tonight but I did sneak in a few minutes to get the rear brake adjusted properly.

LOL, we drafted a plan:
New/used white-wall tires - found some yesterday that are brand new - but were stored in a garage for years for $20.
New white grips (3/4") - ordered on Amazon this week for $6 shipping included.
De-grease but leave natural patina and age
Polish de-rust all chrome
Lubricate all bearings/re-pack with fresh grease
Attach new white pedals (in a bag that came with the bike - I like free)
Re-upholster seat - got to figure this one out...never attempted this before.
Then cruise the neighborhood and show this unique bike to all the kids riding modern day crap from Walmart.
