Addiction LXXVIII

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Next week is going to be a recovery week though; this last one kilt knackered me.

I was veeery tempted to smack some other people's kids upside the head.

Family and I were in a Sur la Table (kitchen wares) - after being closed for months during the pandemic, they finally opened back up only to put up a "store closing" sign yesterday. That bummed out my wife, as they're one of her favorite stores in the area, so we made a point of walking over today.

In walks a group of privileged kids, all boys, in that 12-13 year old range - it's a relatively well-to-do part of town, and there's always a bunch of these unruly little ****s around. They collectively stop to look at some Swedish painted stoneware that's conveniently near the door. I overhear one of them say, "I'll give you 15 dollars," and I noticed a couple of them with their phones out, recording. The fat one, surprise, surprise, grabs dish and "trips," sending it smashing in to the ground. All but the fat kid dash out of the door, while the fat kid puts on a bull**** it-was-an-accident face. With the store closing and the clearance sale going, the lady working there was in IDGAF mood and was just like, "yeah, whatever," and sends him on his way.

So, the thing here is I have to use levers to put the tire on. So I pinched the tubes with the lever, one flat was from a spoke hole. I just finished patching them all plus 4 more.
Could it be due to thier being 23 mm tires?
I put the Michelins on no problem, no flats I just didn't care for the dead ride they gave.
I also tried a wire bead ultra deport I have due to an ordering error. Also No bueno. Can't remember when I've been this frustrated.
Also had a flat on my recovery ride this morning. Had to use my only surviving backup tube to get back to the car.

If you're not used to tubeless ready rims, you need to make sure that the beads of the tire are all the way in to that center depression that runs around the rim bed. Do that and you should have plenty of room to get the last bit on without having to resort to a lever. Oh, and it helps to end at the valve as that'll give you a little bit more slack than if you don't.

But, ls01, just use the adhesive tape like Stan's, and as wide as the whole rim bed. It doesn't matter if tubeless-compatible or not; that's the best way to avoid the strip moving over.
Here's what I see. There is a narrow trough in the center of the rim bed. Thats for the bead to go into to give some room for the bead to go over the bead of the rim. But the first tire bead is already in there , so no room for the second sidewall. Without that extra force the bead isn't big enough to go around the outside of the rim. I get about 10 inches I have to use levers on, and its a regular *****. This is also why the rim strip is moving. The tire beads get under it ,and push it over.
if the tape is thicker, no way is that going to work.

Tubeless tape is thinner than most rim strips. Even the two layers recommended for road pressures is thinner. And less likely to move on you. Clean rims with acetone or alcohol before taping

The adhesive tape is thinner, yes, but it sounds like there's something off in your technique - you shouldn't have trouble getting both sidewalls into the trough during installation. I manage to do it with latex tubes and not pinch them, and I'm a ham-fisted idiot.

Just put some unwanted bar-height swivel chairs out on the curb with a big ol' "FREE" sign.

Last time I did something like this it was picked up within an hour. I'm more rural now but all the condos in the complex I live in are built exactly the same so hopefully they find a home quickly.

People love free stuff, right?

If you would have put "SANITIZED" on the sign, they'd be gone by now.

Ok, I ordered some schwalbe 25mm tape. I patched 16 tubes total. A few had multiple injuries.
Without rim strips or a tube, I can get the tire to go on. Its not easy but I can do it without levers, using my thumbs. I might try a bit of baby powder to lube things next time.
For now I'm going back to the Reynolds wheels on Contador.
I have blisters on both thumbs from all this tire melarchy
