Definitely an "I've been dreaming of these forever" price point, but oh-so-sexy and I do love my Contis. A couple of months ago the Trek got GP5000s; if these had been around then I'd have been all over them. Fortunately I've also grown accustomed to the rootbeer sidewalls of the GP Classics for vintage rides, so that takes some of the edge off.
All that, and I still want a set. Hahahaha

I'll stick to black. The modern tan 'skinwall' look isn't my cup of tea. Too fake looking. When skinwalls were real it was because the tire was made from a cloth casing with a black rubber tread strip glued to it.
Anyway, Continental bike tires are supposed to have root beer brown casings, not tan.

Are you sure that it was commonplace for the casing fabric to be left raw? There are plenty of cold-glued tires still made today, and basically all commercial models intended for outdoor use add rubber to the tire sidewalls, to prevent contamination and water from damaging the tire casing. When they're tan, they're tan because tan rubber is used. Rubbers of other colors can work as well, which is why most Vittoria cotton tire models are offered with both tan and black sidewalls. It's only really in indoor track racing that uncoated sidewalls are a thing.

I didn't mean to imply they were left raw and uncoated. Originally and traditionally they were coated with clear latex. I assume synthetic coatings were used later. Not sure which ones. The only vulcanized black rubber part was the tread. That's what a skinwall is. On modern tires, the entire tire is vulcanized or baked in one piece. We used to call this style of construction gumwall. It used to be this only worked for heavier utility tires, but at some point it became practical for performance tires as well.
