Garage Bike Storage

Hey Everyone,

Just purchased a new home and looking at setting up the garage. Previously, I have used a few of these and it worked pretty well:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt...-202305470-_-N

I don't think I have enough wall space in the new garage so I'm thinking of using this:
https://www.harborfreight.com/mobile...age-61231.html

^Anyone use something like this? Has good reviews and the price is right...doesn't seem like it could work for 6 bikes from reviews, but I just need it for 4...

Simple. Cheap. And spatially optimized.

These are the cheapest option if your ceiling is not too high.

I use those hooks in my garage, bikes take up less garage floor space when hanging from the ceiling. I hang mine by the wheels, the bikes are hung by the first bike being hung by the front wheel, the next by the rear etc, this way I can pack them in tighter. Alternately one could put two hooks for each bike so that the bike is completely upside down instead of head or tail standing but it's more cumbersome to do it that way because the front wheel will flop around more, and you should be on the taller end of the spectrum. The rubber stuff on the hooks is not real high quality so I covered my with thin small diameter pipe insulation.

I use these:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Closet-P...5-WT/100003620

They come in a variety of lengths etc. I slide a piece of innertube over the hook to protect the bike. With one bracket, you can hang a bike from its head tube. With two, by the top tube. For compactness, you can remove the wheels, hang them on the bracket, then hang the bike on the hook. If you're using two, you can put a shelf between them for spare parts or tools.

Even keeping a bike just a few inches above the ground lets you sweep under it, if you're doing things in there that generate wood shavings or dirt.

My garage is under the house, and there's no ceiling space where the bikes wouldn't get in the way. The wall space is taken up by shelves or... bikes. The rest of the bikes have to be parked on the floor. I know kick stands are controversial, and they can't be installed on all bikes. In my house, every bike that can take a kickstand without damaging it or causing humiliation to the owner, has one. This is far and beyond the easiest way to park a bike in my garage.

If you hang your bicycle vertical and it has hydraulic brakes, make sure you hang it with the handlebars in the up position, higher than the calipers. Had one bicycle with Hope hydraulic brakes and if you stored the bicycle with the front wheel down, air from the master cylinder would travel to the caliper and the brakes would be spongy. After switching to the handlebars up, no problems from then on. Other manufacturers of hydraulic brakes do have have this problem, but at this point I just do handlebars up on bicycles that have hydraulic brakes.

I have a Cannondale SuperX with Sram Rival HDR and regularly hang it from the rear wheel and from both wheels upside down. I've been storing it that way for 3 years and have yet needed to bleed he brakes.

I use the Harbor Freight bike rack. Works great, and is built very well. The casters are nice, I can wheel it out of the way when I need room for something else.

I've heard of other people getting 6 bikes on their racks, but I don't think I would put any more than 4 on it. Seems to be a really tight fit for 6 bikes.

Yes, this is the cheapest, simplest option, and ceiling height is a non-issue. Just screw them into the wall, high enough so that you can hang a bike by the wheel without the other wheel hitting the floor. This is also a space-saving option, as you can hang bikes next to one another.

Appreciate the feedback! It seems like a steal for the price...

Thanks to everyone for your replies/feedback. The home has built in overhead storage in the garage with a ladder so I don't have a lot of height to work with...

I have had an issue with a bike with hydraulic brakes where I stored it upside down and the brakes became mush. I don't think it's a problem if your lines are free of air, but still...

That would suck, but that's what homeowner's insurance is for...

I might lock them together to make it "inconvenient" for a thief to take them, but if they really wanted them it wouldn't be that hard...

My local bike shop has an interesting and simple setup. The bikes just hang off a wooden bar underneath the seats.

Im jealous of your garage cieling height. I'd love to have tall ceilings in my garage.

Unfortunately I dont. So I made use of the limited vertical space I have -

Something to think about -

How often do you use your bikes?

Who uses them?

Can they easily put up and take down the bikes?

We use our bikes daily, especially in the summer. So I needed a way for the kids to be able to get to amd put away their bikes.

We also have floor stands for our road bikes. Just wheel the bike up and its parked. Wifey can easily grab her bike and go.

same here! I keep my two wheel rides indoors all year round.

Wife is fine with it because I don't ask her opinion or they would be in the garage with me probably. I do store them in the basement when company is over just in case.

OK. Most importantly, we all know that Quaker Oat Squares are really good only if you put tons of sugar and cream on them, completely defeating the purpose.

So you have a lot of kids or you love folders? Your garage is also very neat. Kids ≠ neat and tidy. What's your secret?

Nope. I live in an old house in an old section of the fifth most populous city in the U.S. My house far pre-dates the time when the average person could even dream of owning a car. Unless a house in my area was demolished and a new house built on the property, it will almost certainly not have a garage.

Quaker Oats squares with Sugar? Gross... Ill take mine plain please

Ive got 4 kids. We traveled full time in a Motorcoach for 4 years and folders were the best way to get 6 bikes into the RV.

Kids just have to put things back where they came from or they dont get to use those things.

Secret? Speak softly and carry a big stick
