Cheap mountain bike hybrid gravel bike

I'm seriously considering changing my walmart special mountain bike to a more substantial hybrid/gravel bike

Sounds like you're asking for some recommendations ????

If so what's your budget?

Flint ridge tires and cowchipper bars sound good to start with. For the tires may run different front.

Crank set have to put more thought into it. Did find a middle burn rs8. X-type super compact crank set. Can be changed out with a Shimano crank set without a problem. I'll have to research that one.

Having done this I would first ask why you are changing what you are changing? Do you want it to look like a gravel bike or perform like a gravel bike?

1. What specifically is wrong with the crankset now? Sub compact gearing refers to road cranksets that are trying to achieve what you may already have and you may not be able to work a 2x system on your triple bottom bracket spindle or derailer.

2. Double check your mtb to see the bar diameter. Modern flared bars come in 31.8mm whereas older/cheap mtb's often come in 26mm or less. You may have to swap stems as well if you can.

3. If you go the road bar (dropbar) route be prepared to replace/rework the brake/shifter levers too. Mtb levers rarely fit modern road bar diameters and the brake pull is different.

I would say go slow and consider a budget as you could easily spend more than a decent new gravel bike just on upgrades.

For reference here's a link to the build thread for this conversion: https://www.bikeforums.net/cyclocros...e-i-could.html

If so what's my budget. Enough to get new wheels and tires if needs be. I have other things to change. 26 x 1.95 is a real measurement it's a schwinn thing. Which would be more practical? Tires or new wheels and tires?

I've been reviewing all the parts I want to change. At this time all 3 (bar, tires and the gears) I will keep the old parts just in case I screw up.
