Yes, when I was a kid in New England, folks built cairns, at homes by the shore, with the idea being to choose specific rocks, not for height, but for aesthetics, often thought of as "Zen" bitd.. In the mts used to mark trails above the treeline.

They're fine in peoples gardens, but I don't like them out in the world at large. In natural/wilderness areas I will go out of my way to kick them over. I see them as a low-level form of vandalism--an "I-was-here" declaration similar in spirit to carving one's initials or spraying paint. I guess I'm a sorehead in that respect. I also kick over redundant cairns on mountain trails.

Partly, I think, they annoy me because I used to work on a trail crew in the White Mountains in New Hampshire, where we built cairns above treeline in the Presidential Range. Hikers were always building monobuttocked little cairns where the trail wasn't supposed to go, and we had to knock them over to avid confusion. It's a lot worse out West, where there's more treeless country. My attitude is that if there's supposed to be a trail, let the trail maintainers build the cairns. If there's not supposed to be a trail, don't create one by making cairns. People who can't find their way without following a line of cairns shouldn't hike where there are no trails

I realize that people who build purely ornamental rock structures in streambeds and such probably mean well, but I wish they would stop. And don't even get me started on those little "fairy houses."

I also kick those cairns over, and enjoy it. You should try doing it while there are strangers around. They act like you're kicking babies.

Or maybe just pointlessly destroying folk art? I admit I'm baffled by all the cairn* hate here. I never anticipated such a reaction from this crowd. I guess there are some who build up, and some who tear down.

(*And these fragile, little one-on-top-of-one rock towers aren't really cairns at all. Traditionally cairns are built as pyramids, with a large base layer of many rocks, a second, slightly smaller layer of rocks on top of the that and so on, until you peak out. Whether to mark a trail or mark a grave in the desert, they are designed to be solid and more or less permanent. Those tiny little Jenga towers of delicate triangulation and gravity stacked one on one are altogether different, as I see it. It really surprises me they inspire such animosity. The artist in me finds them amusing; the engineer in me finds them quite clever and fascinating, in the same manner as a house of cards.)

Couldn't find the dogsled just now but this is my today ride. Came up from behind a couple of loose Greyhounds on the path? Nope. Got within 40 ft of them before mom leapt out into the d-y-k-e-lands. Junior was a lot more interested in me. about 20 feet away After a 3 minute Mexican standoff, I got on the bike and followed him. Beautiful animals.

All Terrain

Usually when I knock over cairns it's to get a photo, or at a tent site. Cairns are quite often in scenic locations and spoil the view, in my opinion.

On one's own property, cairns are like garden gnomes: kitschy but harmless fun for the grandkids. On trails and natural areas they are in the category of graffiti, litter, and old campfires. I trust that fellow cairn knockers-over will also pick up a few pieces of litter and scatter ashes they encounter, too.
