Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I used to live 5 minutes from there in Summerlin! I used to take my Corvette through there every weekend! Too bad I wasn't into cycling then, I think I hiked every trail there though!

Just two weeks ago, we stayed at the newish Red Rock Casino, which is a short bike ride from the entrance of Red Rock canyon. I had one of my bikes shipped to the hotel, in advance. We went cycling by day and drove into the strip at night for the shows, making for a nearly perfect vacation. The Red Rock Casino is really nice.

Red Rock Canyon itself is a national park -- but I worry that the Summerlin area will be overdeveloped and overrun with tourists. That would ruin the charm of that area.

Very nice pictures! I lived in Vegas in 1982 and used to hike up at Red Rock. My parents live in Henderson NV and I live in Flagstaff so I'm in the Vegas area a fair bit. I always take my bike when I go for a visit. I almost went riding up at Red Rocks during my last visit in March but it didn't work out.

There is an MUP that goes from Railroad Pass, down into Henderson, and along the hills and eventually turns east near I-15. I've heard it is supposed to, at some point, head down to Lake Mead and connect back up to the existing trail at Railroad Pass. Do you know if the entire trail is complete? I've ridden it many times, last year, from the pass to the I-15 area and although it is open to pedestrians, I've only seen a few people ever walking on it. It is wide enough to safely ride past pedestrians and the country is generally so open that you see them in plenty of time.

You'll have to check out my neck of the woods when it gets too hot from all day rides over in Vegas.

It's still not complete , I'd never had a problem with that small stretch of highway until the Monday before I took these photos. I got 2 flats(1 cut the tire beyond use) on my way out of town, and had to scratch Red Rock from my plans for the day.

It never gets too hot for me here (at least that's what I tell myself because work won't let me travel during the summer). Are there many good routes around Flagstaff? Maybe in October I'll spend a few days riding there. I'd like to ride down Oak Creek Canyon to Sedona and Jerome. I've driven it many times, but it would be so much better to cycle it. How is the climb to Jerome? It looks fricken sweet.

there are a few shops that rent road bikes if you don't want the hassle . PM me if you want more info.

If you enjoy mountain biking, Boulder City has some World Class trails at www.BootlegCanyon.org. My LBS can hook you up with a great all-mountain or DH rig, if you need one,and the rent body armor as well(heavily recomended).

It's starting to get warm, but it's the 110 degree, 20mph winds that get me down .

I always figured that would be a beautiful ride. I've driven there a few times on the way to Lake Mead, but now I think I need to go back and do that ride. Is it an annual event I can do next year when I have built myself up to doing a century?

there is a Las Vegas Century, but I work weekends, so I'll ride that route solo whenever I have time(6-10 times a year).

Red Rock is just a few miles from town on West Charleston. If you're passing through LV on the way to the lake, I'd park at Red Rock Casino and use that as a starting point.
