Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My "new" steed...

Ok, so, through a bizarre series of twists and turns I wound up with a 1998 (or so) custom, hand-made, Reynolds 853 steel DEAN frame, with all the trappings of a single-speed bike attached to it. Here it is as I purchased it for -- get this -- $150.00 worth of miscellaneous parts:

To date, I've been riding a Trek 1000 on which I'd done some minor wheel and component group updates. Here it is:

After contemplating what I wanted to do with the DEAN, I ultimately decided to make it my primary road bike, pulling parts off the Trek and moving them to the DEAN. I ran into some problems -- the rear triangle was much shorter than the Trek and so I had to get smaller tires. The chainstays on the DEAN didn't have the dimples for a triple crank, so I had to mickey-mouse my triple into a double and try to make the triple FD work. Which, of course, it didn't do very well.

I *just* finished installing a legitimate double crank and front derailleur, and thought I'd show it off a bit. I'm still running a triple brifter brake/shifter unit (whatever you choose to call it), but I can deal with having to double-tap to up- or down-shift. Anyway, here it is:

Let's see... it's a DEAN reynolds 853 steel hand-made custom frame with an Easton EC30 fork. The stem is a ControlTech and the bars are Bontrager Sport. The saddle is an SDG CompTI on a ControlTech post. Brifters are Shimano Tiagra, as is the rear derailleur. Cranks and front derailleur are Shimano 105, with Shimano Ultegra SPD-SL pedals. Wheels have Shimano Tiagra hubs and Mavic CXP23 rims. Headset, bottom bracket, and cassette are all Shimano as well.

It rides crazy smooth. The standard double is going to take some getting used to, considering I'm coming from a triple. It's also way lighter than my Trek 1000, which is nice. Lots more flex though.

I considered that, but I already have a fixie and I've wanted another steel roadie ever since I sold my Bianchi Strada in the late 80s for a ridiculously cheap price to take a girl to Disneyland.
