Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Building new bike up, need input

Ok, I bought a Cannondale from and now need to make a bike of it.

GVHbikes seems like where I want to order from, almost the same price as Probikekit.com but they let you customize and I want a compact setup.

Here are my current thoughts:

Full Ultegra group
R700 compact Crankset
upgrade the BB to DuraAce
(considered upgrading the RD to DA also, but not sure)

My main question is around the Handlebars and Stem, I have never had to choose before.....
They have basically the full Deda and Richey line.... would appriciate any thoughts.

The new Frame is a Cannondale R3000 Caad7 Optimo, if that helps...

Tom at GVH will take great care of you, no matter what you decide on. I bought a SRAM Force group from him in January and the price and service was excellent. In your case, I think the Ultegra group with the R700 crankset is a fine choice, that's exactly what I have on my Serotta and it's been great. I also think there is no need to upgrade any of the components to DA, unless it makes you feel better, because you won't find any discernible difference in performance. As to bars/stem, I'm a big Ritchey fan and have WCS bars and stem on several of my bikes.

Good luck with your build!

Good to hear more positive feedback for gvh, I have used Probikekit, and have no complaints but they don't have any compact Ultegra setups...

I know some of the DA stuff is not a durable like cassettes... but I seem to remember people recommending the DA BB upgrade (it's only $8, so the cost is not an issue, unless it is more likely to fail)
