22F, calm wind, 5 mile trip
Head: Old Navy Cap under helmet, fleece neck gator
Torso: terramar tech-skin, winter jersey, long sleeve cotton jersey.(Got real cold so put on Windbreaker. It was soaked by the time I got to work, even with front completely open(just zipped at bottom). It does not breath enough.)
Legs: knickers, 50/50 wool/cotton long underwear, sweat pants
feet: Coleman merino wool socks, Lake shoes.
Hands: hunter orange thermax gloves.

33F, not much wind, 3 mile trip (last night)
Head: Novara Thermal Tech Skull Cap under my brain bucket
Torso: Silkweight base layer long sleeve tee, Pearl Izumi Optik jacket
Legs: Adidas shorts, Hind Radiant Thermal tights
Hands: Man***** Silkweight Windstopper Gloves underneath some Pearl Izumi Gel Lites
Feet: Pearl Izumi summerweight socks, Specialized Taho shoes.
The Pearl Izumi Optik is a pretty good windstopper and it's all I've really needed so far, even down into the 20s. I've been pleasantly surprised.

-22F/-30C, 8 to 10 miles with one stop midway, no wind, thin snow and compacted ice.
Patagonia capilene midweight bottoms
REI heavyweight polypropylene socks
Helly Hanson midweight zip-Tneck
Performance Triflex bib-tights (damn them, they stopped making these)
Cannondale boulder fleece jersey
PI zephyr vest
Lake MXZ300 shoes
Arcteryx sidewinder jacket
REI Seirus THick-N-Thin balaclava
Nashbar lobster claw mittens
generic REI polypropylene liner gloves
Smith Bazookas
Briko helmet with a Louis Garneau helmet cover.
Some icing problems with the eyewear whenever I came to a stop. Hands were ok once I put the liners on. My feet were a little cold after the longest stretch, I think I'll find some over-booties that fit over the Lake's. Torso and legs were fine. -20F is pretty much my fun limit, but I'm a little reluctant commuting at -20F since it can easily drop another 15 degrees in a few hours this time of the year.

Today I wore:
Head:
Helmet, Ear band -one over ears, one over nose/mouth, Lightweight Balaclava X 2
Torso
Performance Winter Cycling Jersey, dryfit baselayer, Lightweight unlined vest, Performance Gore Tex Cycling jacket.
Legs
Nashbar Epic Cycling shorts, Foxwear Powershield tights, regular tights.
Feet.
NOrmal cycling socks, wool socks, Lake MXZ 300 shoes.
Hands
LIghtweight fleece gloves from Target, Glacier Glove Convertible MItts.
Conditions
18 F, North wind 25 mph, gusting to 35. Started out in the dark. After sunrise sky was cloudy. Rode 1 hour 34 minutes. (20 miles)
Notes:
Recently had Lake Winter shoes stretched to prevent restriction. Seems to have helped a slight amount. My toes were slightly cold but not uncomfortable. Still think 20 F is about the basement for these shoes, the strong wind tore into them today.

Has anyone tried the Louis Garneau Gemini Jacket? It got great reviews in BICYCLING Magazine, but I was wondering if anyone here has actually tried it out?
Thanks,
Thanks,

dryfit sleeveless shirt, Performance Winter Cycling Jersey, Lightweight unlined vest, Performance Gore Tex Cycling jacket.

Nashbar Epic Cycling shorts, Foxwear Powershield tights, lighter tights
Feet.
Cycling socks, Heavy wool socks, Lake MXZ 300 shoes, over socks from Foxwear.
Hands
LIghtweight fleece gloves from Target, Glacier Glove convertible mitts. .
Conditions
13 F, light wind, sunny. Rode 1 hour 30 minutes. (20 miles)
Notes:
Got hot quickly. At 2 mile mark had to stop and remove one balaclava and one ear band. Pretty comfortable for rest of ride. First ride with oversocks. They seem to make a difference as this is the coldest i have been able to comfortably wear my Lake shoes. It did warm up during the ride and was almost 20 F at the end, so jury is still out.

Conditions:
15 F, partly cloudy, windy, 6:30am, burrrrrr x 13 miles
Head:
Wool tanker's cap, balaclava, glasses
Torso:
Polypro base, Merino wool mid, Burley Rockpoint jacket
Legs:
Performance polypro tights, J&G Patrol pants
Feet:
Smartwool socks, Answer boots
Hands:
polypro glove liners, fleece lined gloves
Notes: At these temps with the wind (and wind chill), I think the Rockpoint was a better choice in a jacket than my usual J&G Wind jacket because it doesn't breath as well through the fabric itself.
It was in the 40s - 60s all last week and in the mid 30s when I rode this weekend, so this morning was a bit of a wake up that Winter has arrived.

Conditions:
13 F, wind 5-10 ssw, wind chill 3 F, 5 mile ride.
head: thermolite balaclava, old navy stocking cap, helmet
(had to remove stocking cap to help vent excess heat)
torso: polypro base layer, canari vortex(?) jersey, gill morph jacket
(had to open pit zips to full at halfway point)
hands: thermax gloves
(fingers got a little numb/cold but moving them helped alot)
legs: canari tights, wool/cotton long johns, sweat pants
(legs got really warm towards the end)
feet: coleman(or winchester) merino wool socks(super-k-mart sporting goods), skechers cross-trainers
( wore the skechers because they are mostly all leather uppers and are looser fitting(with the socks) than my lake bike shoes, thus toes stayed warmer)

Conditions: 40 degrees at the start (before sunrise). 1hr 14 mins later it was 55 degrees. There was a slight wind out of the east and it was clear and dry.
Head: Headsweats tritech winter skullcap, helmet.
Torso: arm warmers, Champion lightweight thermal long sleeve base layer, short sleeve orange alert shirt, illuminite vest.
Legs: Performance elite shorts, knee warmers, loose shorts on top.
Hands: Specialized bg short fingered gloves, wool gloves on top.
Feet: Defeet wooleator socks, cheapo low cut hiking shoes.
Notes: It was my first sub 50 degree weather ride of the season and I felt underdressed even though I was sweating within 10 minutes. I should have worn a long sleeve alert shirt instead of arm warmers and brought along a jacket for the return trip as vest does nothing to keep out cold crosswinds. Windproof gloves would have been nice and it's time for sock liners as my feet froze today.

41F windy, wet no-rain
Head: Wool cap, fleece/vinyl liner
Face:
Hands: Kidskin leather (unlined)
Jacket: Marmot ATV, Eddie Bauer wool zip, ultra thin Medima wool undershirt
Pants: PI ThermaFleece
Shoes: Garnae Winter racing boot with thick wool sock
The added reflectivity on the back of the tights and jacket was well recieved. 1 layer too many on the top. 1 Layer too few on the legs.

8F, 5-10 mph crosswind, 11 miles
Head - light balaclava, helmet with cover, clear ski goggles
Torso - Champion C9 silkweight base, REI MTS Merino base, REI Mistral jacket
Legs - REI MTS Merino base, REI Mistral pant
Feet - Smartwool liners, Smarwool hiking sock, Lake MXZ-301 boot
Hands - Smartwool liners, Man***** windtex lobster mitts
Bike - Trek L200, trekking bar, clipless, Nokian 700c 35mm 106
Fingers and toes got a little cold, all else was perfect. This feels like my limit for covering my face. I keep the balaclava at my chin, so my birthday card money is going toward a cold weather mask (not a full balaclava). Cabela's has the one I want.

Jacket: Viking Tempest II waterproof shell with polar fleece sweater underneath

Note that I ride a trike with a front fairing, so I can dress light on my feet and legs. For now...

Today I wore...
Head: Helmet
Torso: Lightweight synthetic running LS shirt under Alert Shirt ANSI Lime/Yellow T-Shirt
Legs: Cycling shorts
Feet: SPD Sandals with mid-weight smart wool socks
Hands: Short finger bike gloves
Conditions: 35F, clear @6:38-7:04 (dark, pre-sunrise)
Distance: 8.5mi
(a bit underdressed, but not uncomfortable - the weather forcast was wrong and my home thermometer broke, temp is read from bike thermometer)

Head:
Crappy Nashbar balaclava. Taped front holes in helmet.
Torso:
mid weight poly shirt, Cabela's light/mid weight fleece, Endura jacket
Legs:
PI ultrasensor shorts, thin REI poly liners, REI midweight polartec outers
Hands:
ski gloves
Feet:
wool socks, Sette Elements shoes, and Gator neoprene booties
Weather:
19F and mild head wind
Legs were too warm. Should have skipped the liners. I'd like to have a thinner fleece shirt, too.
