Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tuesday's Red Rock photos

I just finished uploading photos of a solo ride of the Las Vegas Century + the Red Rock scenic route(122.1 miles) in 7:03:47 . That's a personal best, but short of my goal of under 7 hours. I would have made my goal if I didn't take so many photos .

this is heading out to Red Rock from Vegas(about 6 miles of glass smooth pavement w/ a 12' shoulder)

this is the "Red Rock" up close.

looking forward

looking back

this is part of the 9 mile descent

you know what's funny about that, is it's only about a 10-15 minute drive from the suburbs. it's a pretty nice escape and the loop is a pretty sweet place to ride.

Too bad about the speed limit with the nice short descents and tight curves.

That's a great area. The mountain bike riding in the Red Rocks area is even better. I did ride through Las Vegas Cyclery/Escape Adventures, and had a great time a couple of years ago.

They're merely a suggestion, I've never seen the speed limit enforced(maybe they do that on the weekends). I would follow the speed limit the first few times through, mistakes are very painful(or so I'm told).

You need to live in Moab for a little while, preferably "in a van, down by the river". That was the best 10 weeks of my life.

Sadly no wildlife to speak of. I've seen Wild Horses and Jackasses there a few times.

This cactus flower was from a ride about a month ago.

after a lightning strike

the 19 miles back to the Las Vegas Strip is all slightly downhill

25-33mph solo, is easy on roads like this.

See that? These were formerly mountains a mile high at least 100 years ago.
But it's so hot out there that all the moisture got sucked out of the mountains,
leaving them looking shriveled and scrawny like you see here.

Damn that's scary!

I'm glad you all enjoyed the photos. Sometimes you take your surroundings for granted.
