geez what a horrible thread!! in a sad way that is. i'm lucky in almost three years of bike commuting 18 miles a day i've never had anything thrown.

i've had a few here and there, but i'm glad to say most of the honks have been when I'VE done something stupid on a rare occasion.

the horrible part being that there are actually knuckleheads out there who would do such a thing... SAD indeed... but I think it is the extremely rare situation where the person intends to harm... more the norm I think this behavior is high school age boys probably trying to impress girls... the ignorance as to the harm a flying projectile could cause always has me shaking my head...

I wrote about a firecracker... had it exploded a little closer to my head (say 6" vs. 2 ft) I cannot help but wonder about the irreparable damage this might've caused... I'm pretty sure the kid (yup, definately high school aged kid) NEVER considered this...

all in all though, I do not feel like a target here in Vermont... I'm over 8K miles this calendar year with no significant incidences

Most people seem very polite when I ride, maybe cause I'm 6'2" and 250lbs with a shaved head...

Yeah, it's funny how little things like that can work in your favour. I've found that I can reduce the amount of crap I get on the road by selecting the busiest routes I can find. This actually works. I've figured it's just the presence of a few witnesses that tends to influence the behaviour of those around me, or maybe it's just the realisation that traffic volumes mean I can actually catch up to them if I feel like it.

On the other hand, it might just be that I'm with commuter traffic, and consequently they are people with better things to do than harass cyclists.

yeah, i'd agree that most of the jerks out there are young pricks with nothing better to be doing. which is really, really, pathetic. in my experience, none of the most aggressive drivers have been any older than me, and most younger. older folks (the bad drivers, that is) are just inattentive, which is no less dangerous, but at least less malicious.

Steel Fork,KFC leftovers and water(All at different times). Which says a lot about the fast food culture since we live 64 Kilometres from the nearest outlet. The fork was the scariest thing as it had the potential to do some damage as thecar was going 110 Kilometers an hour in the other direction.

You might be right about that. I am 6'4" and 250lbs (head not shaved, but no one could know that beneath my helmet and headsweat) and I haven't had anything thrown at me yet, either.

Skateboards, cigarettes, beer cans and bottles, and one taxi (he said it was an accident, I think otherwise ). Nothing but the taxi hit me, and that wasn't too bad of a spill. Hurt his car more than it did me or my bike.

I am amazed there are so many cases like this posted... some very openly violent people and stupid teens behind the wheel. Amazing they are willing to risk everything for nothing.

A full bottle of Miller High Life purposely thrown at me shattered on my stem sending broken glass and a spray of beer everywhere. Also one July 4th I was on the main highway leading to a popular state park in Ohio (Ceasar's Creek) and had live firecrackers thrown at me twice.

Has anyone considered brandishing a flaming sword over their head while riding? Perhaps I have an odd sense of humor, but I always picture myself as a Doomsday Rider or some such.

Cyclists would make great Grim Reapers though. As evidenced on this thread and in this forum, we see the true dredges of society.

My dad had a cake knife thrown at his head. I believe the handle hit his shoulder and the blade bounced off his helmet. He was violently enraged when he spoke of the incident. I think there was frosting transfer from the knife to his helmet, but I could be remembering wrong, it was YEARS ago. No, I'm pretty sure there was some residual icing on his person. Who carrys a dirty cake knife?

So far I have people honk at me for no reason. I also had a dog chase me I was about to kick it in the face but it was small and I would have felt bad. Also the high ass vatos who owned the dog probably would have thrown some bullets at me.
