It was interesting to learn that 1981 was the first year that Miyata used their own tubing. I purchased my 912 with the Miyata tubing as a frame on Ebay a while back.

I need to look through this thread to see if there are any other Miyatas out there with Victory/Triomphe. I'm diggin' it on my '82 912.

Been an admirer for a long time, since my mom bought a Nine Twelve new in '86 (she still rides it). Joined the cult myself two years ago when I bought an '88 Seven Twelve frame and fork. I repainted it from the original white and red to the black and green that was also available that year, and built it up with 3x11 Athena and 650b Velocity A23 wheels. Great bike.

Bought a red Miyata 710, mid 80's .... for $50 about ten yrs ago. It has a stock 52/42 crank and I'm thinking of changing the crank to a 50/34 or even a triple 52/42/30 for hill climbing. Don't mind putting money into this bike. Seems like a good frame.

The Triomphe crankset remains one of my favorite Campy cranksets. Elegant, svelte, and just a lovely design.

Some small updates to my humble 310: Added a Fujita belt saddle which is far more comfortable than I expected, a crane bell, upped the tires from 28 to 32, swapped for a shorter stem, threw on some new bar wrap and a large acorn saddle bag thanks to nlerner.

Looks great! Nice bell!

Do you know what year that is? Looks like an 86, but the color doesn't seem to match the year.

Thanks! It’s an ‘85, although I tend to see the blue far less often than the gray one. ‘85 I believe was the first year for the Golden Arrow groupset on the 310, and I believe the ‘85 and ‘86 are likely identical outside of color scheme.

Love it. You can make a bike like that do anything. Roadie, randonneur, touring, bikepacking (if converted to 650b).

Miyata 912 (Nine Twelve) 50cm Sizing?

Hello friends!

I'm thinking about joining your cult as a 1986 912 (Nine Twelve) has caught my eye. The price seems right, it looks like it has been well maintained over the decades and it has a lovely black and pink Miami Vice-esqe paint job! The only issue I have concerns the size of the frame - it's 50cm. Normally, I would just contact the seller and arrange a meeting; however, this bike is located several hundred kilometres from where I live, so I really don't want to make a wasted trip (I'll be doing it as a three-hour detour next week).

I'm about 168 to 170cm (5' 6" or 5'7") in height and have an inseam that hovers around 75-76cm (29"), depending on if I'm barefoot or wearing cycling shoes. Unfortunately, Miyata's 1986 geometry chart does not list standover height but does list top tube length (535mm). The length of the top tube is in the ballpark with my current road frames, but the standover height is difficult to determine. Another problem is that Miyata did not offer a 52cm version of this frame - it jumped from 50cm to 54cm - and I'm pretty sure 54cm is too big. 52cm would have been my Goldilocks size.

Does anyone have any experience or advice about the sizing of a 50cm 912 frame for someone with my dimensions? The Miyata Pro of this era also had that 50cm to 54cm jump in frame size.

Thank you!

My mom has an '86 912 50cm that she bought new, and still rides (although I think the only original part left at this point is the headset). She's 5'5". She did replace the seatpost fairly early on to get the saddle at a good height, so maybe she could have used a 52, as well. The tall stem is fairly recent, when she turned 70. She can still ride faster and longer than me.

Thank for this. It looks like I’m going to be right on the sizing cusp.

I normally prefer a frame that is a bit too small compared to one that is a bit too large as it’s easier to make it fit. This one will be really close!

My measurement suggests that this Univega Gran Rally is a 50 cm frame. The stand over height on this bike is 29.5 inches. The construction of this frame is very similar to my 57 cm Miyata 912. So, I'm pretty sure that this frame was made by Miyata.

Tomorrow my husband is picking up two Miyatas. A 112 for me and a Countryrunner ATB for him. (Really, I think he only agreed to get me the bikes because he wants to go on a long drive alone, the poor guy.)

Here are two not great photos.

Nice! Don't know anything about the bike he's picking up but your 112 will be a solid ride! That's the great thing about 80's Miyatas, the were all punched above their weight it seems, even the lower models. Post pics of the whole thing once cleaned up, we don't get to a see as many of the 1xx or 2xx models. White is always cool.

The 112 cleaned up to be one of the best frames I have. Now it just needs a wheel set because the rear is quite bent and the 27” had been changed to a 700c.

Velomine. I got the 27" wheelset for my Miyata-built '84 Univega Viva Sport from there a couple of years ago. $119 for the pair. Sealed hubs, stainless 14ga spokes, and narrow Sun M13II rims (they have other/wider rim choices as well) They're machine-built wheels, so a quick spoke retensioning is all that was needed.

I too would very much like a Miyata 1000 or a Team.

The top tubes seem to be on the short side in relation to the Seat tube length, I found that I fit best on a Miyata 1 size bigger than what I normally ride.
I have both 56cm and 57cm Miyata frames. While the smaller frame is usually my size, I like the fit of the larger frame, as well.
