Recumbent What IS that thing?! Recumbents may be odd looking, but they have many advantages over a "wedgie" bicycle. Discuss the in's and out's recumbent lifestyle in the recumbent forum.

My new best friend

I've had this trike about seven years, riding it very rarely until now. It will be my steed until I've healed from shoulder repair.

What did you have done to your shoulder? I’m facing a total replacement in the near future. Although I ride a recumbent, I doubt I’ll be able to ride for a while. At least you have a trike!

Had the labrum reattached, the rotator cuff repaired (more like restored) and arthritic decay/bony growth removed. I won't start PT for another two weeks. PT was delayed for maximum healing. This was my dominant (right) arm. Third day back at work now. I can do most of my usual occupational tasks, but writing is difficult because I cannot pivot my forearm outward very far. Hopefully the PT will help. I'll know in three months whether a shoulder replacement is in order.

Thank God I have the trike. I can steer the trike and brake with my left hand. I ride with the right arm in a sling, close to my body. Shifting is the only challenge, naturally, but I think I've found a rear cog that will allow all shifts on the front derailleur alone, at least when riding near home.

Best wishes with your procedure.

I sure hope your recovery goes well and you won’t need a replacement. I’ve been putting it off for years, but the limited range of motion and the pain is really starting to affect more and more of the simplest tasks I try to do. I’ve talked to people who have had it done and it’s a crap shoot as to whether they think it’s worth the time and pain. But I think it’s time to bite the bullet and get it over with. I sure will miss riding for that time. Enjoy the trike!!

Maybe we can meet up after your surgery. You can ride the trike and I can ride your two-wheel bent! I’m just outside Cola.
