Hello all, A year or 2 ago, I came into possession of a Nishiki Custom, for about $20 USD at a thrift store (it was in very rough condition. It is now in good working condition, but there are still some cosmetic issues). I am having trouble identifying the year based on the Serial Number, because it does not fit any of the formats presented earlier in this thread. The serial number is: S9G6774, and it is located on the bottom of the Seat Tube, on the non-geared side. It also has a California Bicycle Licence Number on it. It has Shimano shifters, and Dia-Compe Breaks. If you could tell me what you think about it, Thanks!

Welcome to the forums. Based on the serial number, in conjunction with the frame characteristics and visible components, it should be a 1979 model. Despite the California license, it may be a foreign model that found it's way to the USA. It appears to similar to the Custom Sport offered in the USA during the same era. The Custom Sport was an entry level model, 2nd from the bottom of the line. Regardless, it's hard to wrong for $20.00. Glad to hear you were able to get it up and running. Enjoy!

Thxs, serial number is 1985 but decals are 1986, so late 1985 manufacture. I've seen several stamped in dual lines, which would make one wonder if 08 wasn't the month (i.e. August) but I've come across too many exceptions, unless it was a short lived practice.

Hello everyone, haven't got any new Nishikis, but my 1984 International is now doing some commuting duties on sunny days and the paperthin Challenge tires is because of that replaced with some Continental Gatorskin to avoid punctures.

I still know little about this bike, but it seems to me that this model is an european only version since I haven't found any pictures of similar bikes from USA or Canada.

Here's my early 70's Nishiki Professional, s/n KE22521. The seller said it was a 1974. I bought it as a frame, fork & headset for this year's Eroica California & built it up from the parts bins. No original components, so no date codes are available.

Just an introduction. I'm Rob, I used to work for the dutch importer of Nishiki and Giant bikes, from the late 70's till early 80's.
I don't know if there's differences in the types, but for sure, the Dutch bikes look different!
I will pick up this Road Ace tomorrow. See what that serial number says.
My wive's Nishiki was bought as old stock in 1979 and has serial starting with EG01189. The SR cranck reads '77....

I suspected it might be EG as opposed the previously reported EC. EG matches up perferectly with a 1977, European market model. Consequently, there's no reason to believe that EspenE's bicycle in not 1984, as you stated in your now deleted post.

Walking around Kansas City yesterday when someone had a bunch of bikes for sale for 10$ in their front lawn. I saw this beat to heck Nishiki and had to have it. It appears to be an upgraded 1977 International. It has Dia Compe brakes, levers, Suntour Cyclone front derailleur, Suntour Cyclone GT rear derailleur, Suntour bar ends, and a Sugino Super Maxy crank. Even came with the Christophe toe straps, even though they are unusable.

Yeah, I'm pretty excited. I think I'm going to clean her up as best I can and have fun with it until I can find a nice enough frame to match the suntour stuff. I'm having some luck on the surface rust with vinegar and fine steel wool.

Anyone have any experience reusing the cool old coiled metal cable housing? I'd like to reuse the stuff coming from the barcons if possible...I have housing laying around, it just looks cool.

Very nice! I've never seen these. In the USA, West Cost Cycle marketed accessories under their Cycle Pro brand. They offered a portable, emergency tool kit with similar tyre irons. Thxs for posting.

Just received a Cresta in the mail. S/N KB 109051. Looks like an 82. The seller said it was a 60cm but it measures out to be a 62. Not sure what im going to do with it. I bought it to be a twin to my Cervino (same color and decals) but i think it'll be too big for me. Its really clean and the decals are in great condition. Headset, bottom bracket spin freely and the crankset is very good condition.
