Bridge Over the River Mississippi
This on the Louisiana DOT website:
Due to the rising Mississippi River causing the closure of the New Roads/St. Francisville ferry, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has opened the John James Audubon Bridge. This emergency opening will accommodate traffic that has lost river-crossing access when the ferry closed. The ferry, which carried approximately 720 vehicles per day according to 2009-2010 DOTD statistics, is permanently closed with the opening of the Audubon Bridge.
and this in answer to my query to the DOT:
The bridge, although open to traffic is not completely finished. There is an 8-foot shoulder throughout the stretch and we have had some bicycles cross over the bridge. However, on both sides at spaced intervals leading up to the bridge there are diagonal raised reflectors on the shoulders. In addition, there are rumble strips on some stretches of the roadway and these are the traditional style. They are not narrow and there are no gaps in between that you would see with bicycle friendly rumble strips.
If you are on the Southern Tier be aware that the St. Francisville/New Roads ferry is permanently closed and decommissioned. I have had one person report that they were stopped when attempting to ride across the bridge. Does anybody else have any information?
