Pizza Port 70 revival
OK, Southern California Clydes and Athenas... (or anybody else who wants in on the action and I do mean ACTION. It's SoCal for pete's sake. (Hollywood! Lights! Camera!)

Sunday, Sept. 30. Meet at ARTIC (just north of Angel Stadium, loads of free parking adjacent to the river trail). Rolling at 8 AM! Sharp!
Here's the route - I adjusted it to go via the highway rather than the base. If you really, really want to ride through the base, you need to get your picture face down to the south gate some time during the week and get a pass. The rest of us will ride the freeway with cars going 20 mph.
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/7342009
We can get water at the convenience store by Cliff (about mile 25) and a snack at the Schwack (mile 33) if desired. From mile 39 to the pizza port at mile 66 there isn't much in the way of water, so we'll want to load up either at the schwack or Doheny State Beach
Inked:
@TrojanHorse
@tunavic
@jimincalif
@Beachgrad05
@DrIsotope (and Mrs.Isotope?). I expect you to ride to the ride. Mrs can drive.
@ahultin
@jsigone
Who else?

We need to haggle out a date and time to do a PP70 ride a la PhotoJoe.
Let's use this thread to argue about the date and time and when we achieve some sort of agreement we'll start a new ride thread.
Fall means great riding weather! Pizza! Beer!
I'd probably prefer a Saturday to make sure we get as much participation as possible but my Saturdays in the fall are a bunch of crap. Sundays tend to be wide open. 9/30 and 11/3 are probably it for open Saturdays but like I said, Sundays tend to openness.
The original / classic route starts at Anaheim (ARTIC) metrolink station. Tons of parking immediately adjacent to SART. Ride down SART to PCH, stop at the Schwack for a memorial plate of bacon and then continue until you get to the marine base, and then because of recent developments we'll probably have to redirect onto I-5 (which, oddly enough, means we're probably riding faster than cars on a weekend). Get off in Oceanside, wend our way to Pizza Port, dine, return to Metrolink in O-side and train back to ARTIC. Easy ride, hardly any hills, tailwind all day.
Commence campaigning for a date.

There are new rules and base ID card needed to ride thru base. Was supposed to start oct1 but they started it last week. Real ID or US passport must be taken to base gate office. Wait times vary. Take photo, pass quick background check and get ID same day.
other option is ride on the I 5 for 8 miles

I'd vote for the I-5 corridor, simply because I have zero time to drive to San Diego to get a pass to cross through the base.
Well, that combined with the fact that despite renewing it (in person) like 9 months ago I have a "normal" CA Driver's License, and no passport. So I couldn't even get the pass anyway.
Woo hoo, land of the free, amirite?

I've got no problem riding the 5. I'm ok with Sundays. I'm out of town the weekend of 10/20-21. We need to watch the MetroLink site, they sometimes cancel weekend service for maintenance.

You can get a base pass with a normal CA DL until they totally phase those out in ... 2021 I think. At least that's what I was told. But yeah, odds of being able to get EVERYBODY on base prior to a PP70 is probably not an option so we'll do the 5. It's not bad on a weekend anyway. Week DAYS are a little terrifying. Er, a lot terrifying.
Oct 20/21 is out for me too, I'll be riding home from San Luis Obispo after visiting my daughter.

Ride to the ride, Mr. Manly Man 100 miles isn't far enough guy.
I don't want to do it that day either, so maybe you're safe.

Hey now, it's not about the miles. It's an excuse to spend more time in Irvine. I mean I can't think of a better place to be for a couple of days.

Right in the landing flight path for John Wayne... so relaxing.
Still, it should only be 80 in Irving compared to 180 in the desert, so there is that.

Also so back to dates, the weekend of 11/3-4 is good either day. 10/21-22 is out. Sunday 10/29 is out for me too.

Alright, we need to get some extra input from some of the other PP veterans... or even one-timers.
@Beachgrad05 @ahultin @Fstop @iTrek you have been summonsed. Who am I accidentally leaving out? I'll ask PhotoJoanne if she wants to ride with us. She won't, but I'll ask anyway once we get closer to picking an actual date.
I guess what we'll actually do is pick 2 or 3 dates and do some voting, I'll get on that in a day or two.

I am in as well and fairly open as to dates. Sebastians graduation means no more weekend kids sports

Just pick a day and let me know. Like @jimincalif, 11/3 is a definite no-go-- that's Bike the Coast, the most laid-back 50 miles I ride all year. I could do 11/4, pending clearance from the boss (who is doing Bike the Coast with me.)
