Internships in the Cycling Industry

I'm currently a 3rd year Mechanical Engineer in Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. Over the next summer we are encouraged to do an internship. As a cyclist, I would love to do one in the cycling industry.

Does anyone have any idea about the best way to go about applying? Through our college we get told about opportunities in various industry, but never in the cycling industry. Is it because they aren't bothered or they don't normally take on Interns?

I would really like to do an internship in something I'm interested in instead of some crappy banking internship doing **** all.

Any help is appreciated!

Mark

Start writing to the companies you are interested in doing an internship. It may be to your advantage that you've never heard of cycling industry internships, you might be one of very few applying for any openings and you taking the initiative in contacting them will be well received.

Good Luck!

Not ahrd to do at all. Look up their websites and find out who (or what department) to contact regarding employment. Then just email or call them explaining your desire for an internship in the future, and follow up with a resume/CV. You might want to stick with European bicycle companies as the USA immigration policies might be a little tough for only a few months fo summer intern work.

Never any harm in asking; the worst that'll happen is you'll be rejected and be right back where you started.

Are you just looking for a summer job or will it be for college credit, and if for credit, what criteria must it meet?

It's just a summer job. It's not mandatory, just "encouraged". I'm not too fussed about getting paid, just want experience really!

Are you willing to travel far? a lot of the actual manufacturing is on the other side of the globe.

'internships' usually mean working for no pay.. at least around here.. USA..

Know: bankers have the world by the bollocks.

I ran a number of engineering intern programs and we paid quite well for a summer job. However, in those programs we preferred students who could keep working part-time a significant number of hours a week during the school year. They were productive contributors. In a some cases, the students could get college credit if certain criteria were met and we of course tried to accommodate that.

In this country they're also called 'stage' and 'stagiaires' are quite commonly hired on in the bicycling industry. Suggest you contact some companies you specificly want to work for and make some inquiries. Not all available positions are publicly posted where you might trip across them.
