It's what you call "an out and back" ride. Imagine the number of repeats you'd have to do to get any any amount of training.
Very nice photo! I'm assuming that the peninsula was man made?

A photo student from a few semesters ago, through his girl friend who is a current student, loaned me his Nikon D70 infrared-converted camera to play with. It's the semester end, and I'm really too busy to go out somewhere and play with it. I did at least find time to dip into a park on my morning commute. I'd stopped to photograph an oak tree, but the light was so nice when I was leaving I leaned my bike on my helmet to photograph it. So, lots of digital IR magic, but no green filter — though it does like like it.

I think the 12,000' elevation messed up my judgement. I ran barefoot through the snow, after climbing Independence Pass just for a tshirt.

Cycled the "Route of the Hiawatha" yesterday and today, down to the bottom and back up to the top. Totally worth doing, if you ever make it to North Idaho. However, be forewarned! You need a bike with some type of suspension. A cross bike and our old bodies will take quite a beating, especially on the way down. Going up wasn't too bad.
This is the start of the "rails to trail" ride at what is called East Portal. Yup, you go through this tunnel. It's 1.6 miles long and really dark inside. You cannot enter without a light.
Once you exit that first tunnel, this is what awaits you. Did I mention that it is cold inside the tunnel. Something like 43 degrees, no matter what the temperature is outside.
This is the kind of environment you are riding in. In the center of the picture is one of the trestles you cross.
Those trestles are pretty high up. Kinda scary looking over the edge to the bottom of the canyon.
The whole trail is only 14.5 miles long, and you go through a bunch of tunnels and over a bunch of trestles. Most people only go one way and hitch a ride in the bus back to the top. It's only 1-2% gradient, so not difficult at all to ride back up to the top. The worst is the gravel. A rigid frame bike is really hard on the body. You can rent bikes, helmets, and lights, if you need to.
Oh, my new bike got really dirty and muddy. Most of the damage was from yesterday when I was bombing through that last, long tunnel. The dirt was hard packed, so you could get up some speed. Unfortunately, it was so dark that you really can't see where the water puddles are. Today, the bike didn't get so dirty, even though it rained last night.

Such a sweet bike. Are those green water bottles or the color of the electrolyte? Love the color combination.
Definitely will have to plan a visit to Idaho to ride. Thanks for sharing.
