We just got back from a tandem tour of the Netherlands!
We have a Kent tandem at home, but we found much to like in the massive German Victoria tandem we rented.

• My wife liked the heft and stability of the steel frame: she could get up, adjust her weight, and I wouldn't even notice.
• The step-through frame even for the captain made mounting and dismounting a lot easier.
• The internal 5 speed hub had some sort of effortless shifter--you couldn't even feel the gears change.

They don't ship Victorias to the US, and I'm not sure this model would fare well anywhere but in absolutely flat country, but does anyone know of a tandem with a similar step-through frame?

It's probably not super similar, but you might like it. My wife and I have a Burley Zydeco.



The top tube is lower than on my single bikes, so I can put my leg over it. Usually, I swing my leg over my saddle. I straddle the bike and hold it up and wait for my wife to get on. She gets on and positions the cranks for me before I get on.

I like the Step Through benefits of my Bike Friday, and they make tandems too,

in Eugene Oregon.

Burly Tandems died when the CoOp went into bankruptcy, then was when the
'green gear' Bike Friday company started , the previous company (owned by the same folks) supplied the framebuilding,
to the tandem shop, who built them up .

Worksman tandems have step-through, don't remember if it's both cockpits or just the rear. Note that it is cruiser-style, old-school-mechanics, etc.. I've seen them used on Craigslist on the east and west coasts, but never in my area. And a one-size-fits-all frame, too. Definitely a flat-land cruise-around-the-'hood bike.
You might also check the CoMotion Periscope. I don't think it's step-through, exactly, but has lower top-tube, if I remember right. It's intended to have an extra-wide range of adjustment, useful for growing kids.

You might be able to find an aluminum Schwinn Sierra or Twinn tandem. Those have step thru on the stoker position. They also have disk brakes. The captain is not step through but the top tube slopes downward fairly steep.

There are quite a few vintage tandems with step through stoker, but not captain. Although, I think I occasionally see one with both.

I have an older Gitane with a mixte on the rear.

I saw a CoMotion the other day, I think, that wasn't step through, but had a really low stoker seat. I presume it was made so one could just keep adding longer seat posts as the stoker got larger. So, for an adult stoker, one could use a 2 foot seatpost.

The Periscope is made with an extra wide range of adjustability, mainly for growing kids. But they do make regular tandems with smaller cockpits for smaller people (and Large/Small frames, etc). And actually, since the stoker doesn't need to straddle the top tube when stopped, you can work with shorter stokers on a full size bike than if they were riding a single-bike.
