Hello from Saline, Michigan

Joining today to meet fellow cyclists and learn new things. Have been riding touring/road bikes on and off since the late 1970s for pleasure and fitness. Fall in Michigan is wonderful for riding. But I am staying off the road for a while due to injuries and bike loss.

Two weeks ago I was hit by an automobile going over 50 mph and flew about 30 feet where I landed with my bike in a grassy downslope and only sustained a separated shoulder, back and neck muscle strain, and bruising on my sides. I am very lucky that I was not injured more seriously or killed. My bike was totaled.

I have the GPS tracking from my garmin watch and may share a Google Maps image of my 18 mile ride, the crash, and my ambulance ride to University of Michigan Hospital once I have reached enough posts. It’s interesting to see.

Trying to decide if I will ever go back out and ride on the road again. I am interested in hearing from others about getting back out there, gravel bikes as alternative to hard surfaces, and other topics.

Welcome to Bike Forums from Kalamazoo. Sorry to hear about your crash and your injuries. I separated my shoulder in a bike crash about 6 years ago and was off of my bike for about a month and a half. I do hope that you get back on a bike when you feel up to it.

This past summer I did a group ride on the paved trails in Dexter. Really nice area to ride in.

Omigosh, that sounds harrowing!
I’m glad you weren’t more seriously injured.
Crazy as it sounds, I’ve had similar happen to me on three different occasions. The severity of my injuries ranged from minor to requiring hospitalization. I got right back on my bike as soon as possible each time.
I was able to brush myself off and ride home once, relatively unscathed. Another time I limped home with various minor scrapes and bruises.
That last time required a trip to the emergency room but I was back on my bike two weeks later, I think?
Difference is that each time, I was in my twenties and, boy, did I heal quicker and better back then...
