I've been to the Tarrytown portion. If you ride all the trails in the park, you'll probably didn't even know you were on it.

If your talking about what I think you are, it's not called the croton aqueduct trail its called the south county rail trail. When you get to the clubhouse you follow the dirt path past the pond on your right and just stay on the dirt path straight for a little bit. you will go by a few holes of the golf course as you follow along this dirt trail and then you will get to a sign that shows the start of the south county rail trail. It is paved for a couple miles then it becomes impassable by road bike. You ride down into a park and then take a couple of streets for about 2 miles and pick the trail up again and can take it all the way to elmsford. Thats as far as I've gone. I know from the end of the south portion you ride another mile or so on the roads and pick up the north portion. From my apt on the UES to the end in elmsford it was exactly 25 miles. I wanted to explore the north portion but I figured I had already gone far enough from home!

The part you ride through in vancourtland is passable on a road bike, not ideal but not terrible.

BTW, this trail is really nice. once you learn how to bypass the overgrown sectoin by taking the local streets the path is smooth, wide, and flat. Not that nyc is crazy hilly but because its a rail trail it's totally flat. It's well protected from wind by trees around it too so even on a windy day you can cruise nicely and because its westchester, not nyc it's not crowded and you can move pretty fast.

I did the entire trail from Brewster down to VC park a few weeks ago. Other than the street sections it is a very nice trail. Only a few sections were busy so you can cruise on it. It was about 50 miles, then I rode the last 25 or so home in Brooklyn. Yes, it is flat, except I had this perception of it being slightly downhill as I was really moving for a while. It wasn't the wind because I could feel it in my face.

Actually, the Croton Aquaduct Trail is another trail.

Whereas the South County and North County trails were built out of an abandoned railroad route (the old New York Central railroad's Putnam Division trackway), the Croton Trail is on the surface along the route of the underground Croton Aqueduct that goes from the Croton Reservoir down to NYC. It's unpaved along its entire length. Not recommended for road bikes. (I think Zacster is also referring to the North and South County trails, not the Croton.)

The North and South county trails are different from the Old Croton Aqueduct.
