Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What data points do you use on your Garmin?

Speed, heart rate, cadence, total ascent, distance... time/temp can be seen by tapping the screen.

Is there a way to change mid-ride when you're already recording?

I have different screens set up for race and for training, but the 3 that are common between the two are:

1) speed, HR, power
2) elapsed time, distance, and time of day
3) temp, battery level

I have a garmin 500.

I think my main screen has time ridden, heart rate, cadence, power, speed, distance, time of day. My second screen has speed, distance, total ascent, % grade. My main screen has everything I want to know 95% of the time.

Can you create two screens with data points that can be accessed mid ride?? Ideally I would want distance/ascent on a separate page so that speed/cadence/heart rate would show up bigger on the main screen

I think you can have up to 5 pages. You can display 1-8 data fields per page. You can cycle through the pages anytime you want.

I had 3 pages for a while, but there was alot of unneeded info there so I simplified things and can get by with 2 pages.

You can change what's on the screen mid-ride; the display and data recording are separate functions.

I have my current speed, ride time, and time of day, distance, heart rate as a % of max, and cadence. The ele chart page has total ascent. I used to have grade on another page but it wasn't that useful and I've disabled it.

Heart rate, cadence, distance on page one....I really don't know what is on the other pages off the top of my head but those are really the only data points I use while riding.

Oh wow... I just disabled all the pages (training partner, elevation graph) but the map and added another page of data points. Sweet!

310xt, 4 fields, 2 screens.
Speed, Avg Speed, Distance, Heart Rate on one
Speed, Grade, Time of Day, Elevation on the other.

If I had a cadence sensor, I'd squeeze it in there somewhere.
I only added Grade recently, and it's inconsistent to say the least, so I might ditch it.

I have 4 screens set up.

Just riding around: speed, ride time, ride distance.
Intervals with power: 10s power, lap power, lap time, cadence
Intervals w/o power: HR, lap time, speed
Kitchen sink: tss, if, kj, kcal, time of day

I have the Garmin Edge 1000 and have it setup like this:

Page 1:
Speed
Average Speed
Distance
Max Speed
Activity Time
Total Ascent
Average Cadence
Current Heart Rate
Time of Day
Temperature

Page 2:
Cadence
Average Heart Rate
Calories
Heart Rate Zone
Grade
Sunrise
Sunset
Elevation
Battery

I only swipe between those two screens on rides and it is rare that I go to the second screen.

Power, time, cadence and HR is my main screen. Those are the only four variables that rally matter for training.

When racing, my Garmin is covered by a piece of tape. I don't need to know any of the information it provides.

I have a 500, and my main page has Speed on top, then below it I have % max HR and cadence, below that I have distance and elapsed time. My second page has stuff I might want to see mid-ride like time of day, temp, etc. My 3rd page has summary stats like avg speed, avg cadence, avg HR, etc.

Yes you can change those settings while a current ride is in progress but I don't recommend doing it while you are actually riding

I don't think he means customize them, but rather change from page to page. You can swipe between the pages with one finger. If you have Di2 you can now use the buttons on the tops of the levers to control it.

My 500 can autoscroll between my two pages, but I have that turned off. I only really look at distance, grade and speed anyways.

I have 3 pages set up, but rarely look at anything but the primary page during the ride. Tells me all I need to know for intervals and other rides.

Primary page
Time of day (h:m:s)
Heart rate | Cadence
10s Power | 30s Power
Speed | Distance

2nd Page
Elapsed time | Avg Speed
Time of day | Avg HR
% FTP | Temp
Totl Ascent | Elevation

3rd Page - mostly for figuring out the PM
Avg Pwr
3s Pwr | 10s Pwr
front tire pressure| rear tire pressure
Elaspsed Time | # hot gals on the ride
