Recycling tyres UK

Just made a dozen phone calls to my local council, bike shops etc.
No one can recycle tyres.
Thats a bit crap, as part of cycling culture is GREEN right?

I searched the forums here and only found 1 thread with just 1 reply.

I will continue the search for a place in the UK,
If any one knows of a place in the UK that would be fab. I don't mind sending them by post.

I HATE throwing things in the "non-recyclable" bin at the local dump.

Just spoke to one of the oldest bike shops in London, and they say not possible in the UK.

If a car and truck tyre can be recycled, why not a bike tyre?

I just bought 4 new tyres, i have 6 worn out ones.
Our modern "civilised" culture is very very short sighted. How we love to consume, but what about taking responsibility?

So,
cycling, not so green after all. How many tyres do we throw into Mother Earth every year?

I'll be delighted if one of you can point me to a place that does recycling, looks like not at the moment.

No clue how things work in the UK, but many local shops by me take in old tires for recycling.

I'd try calling a few other bike shops. Just because one is old, doesn't mean it is best suited to answer your question.

Good idea and one I never considered.
It is a very few dollars to recycle a car tire.
A bike tire if they charged at all would be a pittance.

From what I've read, the main use of recycled tires is as fuel. So it might actually be better to landfill them and keep the carbon out of the atmosphere.

I thought they were used to make asphalt; they burn dirtily. As they would displace other fuels, burning them may make little difference to atmospheric carbon.

The Local dump/recycling centre where i live just told me that most tyres from them go to fuel fires.
We are about to have a MONSTER rubbish incinerator 8 miles from our house.
Look up Gloucestershire incinerator.
Its caused massive protests. We bought our new house using "plume watch"
as a guide to where we would get clean air or not.
Tyres are going to be burnt there.

The up shot of all of this is, i need to be more responsible and by tyres that are going to last longer.
I'm not a dirt demon needing to have my bike sideways through every turn.
Harder compounds will last longer in the main.

Incineration is more common in Britain and Europe, so I read. The Wikipedia page says they're mostly burnt https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tire_recycling . Burning them still displaces burning other things.

I just chuck them in the bin. If you twist them a few times, they get really small, so they're less harmful. Or just throw them over a lamp post, they stay there forever.

I don't see the point in making stuff out of them, unless it's going to prevent something else harmful being manufactured. But we like rubber concrete, especially in parks.

This is quite common in the UK.
A good use for them.
