Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Some of my Favorite Cycling Photos

Turn the pedals or push the shutter? Usually it's one or the other. Sometimes, though, I can't keep from mixing the two. These ten photos, which stretch back from just a few days ago to about a year, were born from that matchup. I made all of them in various locations in California.

Paceline, Solvang Century.

Wildflowers in Manhattan Beach, just a few blocks up from the ocean.

The start of the road up to Onion Valley in the High Sierra

Donut Ride, Ballona Creek bike path in Marina Del Rey, at 7 a.m.

Up to the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook, Culver City. Six tenths of a mile, 325 feet.

Top of Fargo Street, with a solid 33% grade, in the hip Echo Park area of Los Angeles.

"The Green Wave" - vineyard in the Central Coast Mountains.

Cycling around the Palos Verdes Peninsula, in the South Bay portion of Los Angeles County, looking out at part of Catalina Island.

Climbing Indian Mountain Road, Oceanside.

In the hills of Griffith Park, with a view of Los Angeles this couple didn't seem to be that interested in on the day before Valentines Day.

Nice work! Did you know those two people in the last pic? That's just a great photo, not that there's much wrong with the rest of them either.

Thanks for the kind words.

While I'd seen the couple earlier in the park, we met a minute before I made the photo. I asked permission to make the photo before I pressed the shutter release. I asked them to keep on doing what they'd been doing. They're both accomplished cyclists and they were good sports for letting a stranger point his camera toward them.

Nice.

Four of my favorites.

1. Summit of Looking Glass Hill (MT 49) between St. Mary and East Glacier during a century day.

2. Melrose Bench Rd. between Melrose and Twin Bridges, MT.

3. MT 41 between Twin Bridges and Butte, MT.

4. "El Diavolo" in Sampeyer, Italy at the '95 Giro, with Rominger (the overall winner) visible in the pink jacket.
