Me too. I rode 87 miles/7,200' in the Eroica ride last year wearing some sort of Sketchers soccer shoe and toe clips/straps on the bike (vintage deal). Last 20 miles my feet were absolutely killing me. I can do Breathless Agony (107 miles, 12,000') without foot pain in my cycling shoes.

Not on the wide platforms of Wellgo MG-1 (or basically any other pinned platform) pedals

Not to rekindle this old argument, but with wide platforms to distribute the pressure, you can ride in crocs

OK, I popped out to a professional graphic designer, and he made this CAD diagram that illustrates the modification of the heel of my running shoe, as viewed from the back of the right shoe

lol you can't make me!

Actually, if you want to pay for it, I wouldn't mind having on-demand GPS maps and directions. But when I don't need it for that, it'll be like my current burner flip-phone, turned off and rattling around the bottom of my kittier.

Oh that's another thing, I don't shave my legs. Is that more or less heretical than not riding clipless? Or wearing spandex?

No, I don't care but you took the trouble to draw stubble on your leg up there.

And it's lycra, not spandex you rube.

Just trying to be accurate. Although, there are no socks in the diagram. I do wear ankle socks, but the graphic designer was going to charge me an extra $100 to render them.

Ankle socks, actually. I don't have any tattoos, but if I ever get one, my current plan is to get a bicycle chain around my right ankle. Above the ankle socks I wear cycling, or with shorts, but low enough to be covered up by regular length socks.

You have the same CAD program that I do .

I now see what it is that you are doing here - at first I didn't get why you were cutting that bit off, but it was the heel strike issue that you are trying to solve.

If I am not using cleats, then I have had good luck with hiking shoes that I got from REI on sale. I really need a good stiff sole or otherwise the balls of my feet really start to hurt. The hiking shoes fit the bill, and they are quite comfortable to walk around in as well. Doesn't solve the heel strike issue however, but for whatever reason I don't seem to have that problem.

Precisely!

...for whatever reason I don't seem to have that problem.
I am duck-footed (anti-pigeon-toed). Even with 20mm pedal extenders, and inner-heels trimmed, I have to be careful about foot position or I get heel strike. People with regular skeletons, and feet that point straight ahead (or are pigeon-toed/heels-out) don't have this problem.

Congrats! A couple months! Does that mean he'll get to enjoy the hospitality of the preemie ward for a little while?
