I rode yesterday. It was 35ºF and extremely windy. That's not crazy cold, but it's hard to describe how crazy the wind was. It was not only strong but also gusty and very shifty, so it changed from tailwind to crosswind to headwind rapidly and repeatedly. Sometimes I was grateful for the headwinds because the extra effort warms me. The longest stretch with a headwind left me almost overheated.

I rode this morning. Left the driveway at about 3:55 am. Air temp was 26, and windchill was 15, with a few snow flurries. I was out there about 2 hours, and when I got back, the temp had fallen to 23 with a windchill of 10, per NWS. So, it's coming your way, as you already know.

Today, it's stayed about 24-25, even with some sun and snow flurries, and there is a constant, pretty stiff breeze from the NW. So, it's definitely winter, but we still don't have white ground, just a tiny dusting.

But, even this blast of colder air isn't a true arctic airmass - a lobe of the Polar Vortex breaking through and pushing the Jet Stream south in a deep trough - its just colder continental air from Canada. Next week we're forecast to go back into the mid to upper 30's for high temps, which is still above normal for SE Michigan by about 8-10 degrees.

I really would like at least a couple of inches of snow cover - I'm sick of the buzzing sound of the studs on bare pavement, it's a little annoying.

So this coming Monday it's supposed to be -19*C here in Toronto. That's -2*F for you Mericans. It should be a tailwind and clear skies. So what say you? Would you ride under those conditions? I'm thinking of pressing the 'easy' button on that day.

I've got an in with the Big Guy... Tailwind in the morning when it's -19, but the afternoon temp should rise a bit.

It'd be miserable but I can handle the commute home. There have been times this winter when the wind is a consistent 40 kph in my face, sub-freezing temperatures, and on top of it all, studded tires, that the misery of riding the 20 km home can be really overwhelming. But I keep telling myself, keep pedaling and you'll get home, eventually.

Correction, temperature on Monday morning is going to be -25*C/-13*F.

-25*C, 30-45 km/h wind, most of my route still covered with snow. I drove. When all of these three factors are dialed up to the max it's not possible to ride the distance I need to. I can probably handle two out of the three, but today is a 'perfect storm'.

I got the "Your crazy!" comment last night.

Chatting with the guy and it turns out he is a duck hunter. Those guys sit in a metal tub in the middle of a swamp in winter and wait for ducks to fly over.

He was like, "Yeah, my wife thinks that's crazy."

visited Daughter in Vermont Saturday. it was -3F degrees. Lake Champlain was smoking. we ran to the wall near Battery Park just to take a cpl pics. then I saw a guy running in sneakers & seemingly only one thin layer (maybe two?) top & bottom & exposed ankles! there's always someone out doing it our Daughter told us. riding bikes too!

I used to run in temps like that back in college. The usual would be one pair of cotton waffle knit long underwear with some shorts over the top, along with 2 pair of socks from the cheapo department store, and probably an oversized sweatshirt advertising the college I attended.

The next week or two should be fun. We're finally getting stupid cold, and it's the first full winter for my department's administrator, so I should be getting some of the "did you ride today?" questions.
