Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That was always the plan for this week, but I was staying quiet in case something happened. But, with a week of vacation and nowhere to go, and no other goals at all, I wanted to get in a solo century.

Woke up at 1am with a sore throat, too, but it seems to have been postnasal drip from allergies because as soon as I cleared it out it felt better, and woke up fine.

But that heat though...

Guess it's a big week all around!

Yeah, I was pretty much riding to previous plan, too. I was hoping to get in a 200k, but was thinking that my wife might need to be on-call today. Fortunately (?) the storm actually knocked out the connection to their server and she couldn't do anything anyway, so the 200k was on. Other than a headwind for the last 50+ miles (), the weather was perfect.

Oh, one thing that wasn't perfect on the day - at about mile 25 I saw the glint of a little patch of glass. I swerved and thought that I'd missed it all, but I heard a psst - psst - psst immediately thereafter.

Pulled over to make sure that there wasn't debris still stuck in there and to check the size of the cut. It was clear and a decent size, but not big enough to need a plug. Spin the wheel, let it seal and then gave it a few pumps at my planned pee break a mile later. Probably didn't even need to do that, it felt like it was only slightly lower than the front tire, but since there was another 100+ miles in front of me, I thought it better to take the 30 seconds and make it right.

You guys are just lucky I'm not willing to start a century early enough to finish before it gets up to 100°

No visible external damage to the animal, but the thing was dead as fried chicken. People with expensive truck often have guards on the front, which I assume are to protect the vehicle in case of a deer or elk strike. On the last day of my 2019 tour I left my hotel in town early. There were several grazing by the side of the road by a gas station/convenience store. A couple of them wandered into the road without looking. The locals know to expect stupid behavior from them.
When I lived in the mountains there was a security guy who would come out and clean and butcher deer when they were hit by cars. He would split the meat with the driver who hit it. I car pooled with a guy who owned a body shop and he got business from deer strikes. Biker395 on the forum hit a deer with his WRX and I think it was like $5k damage.

One of my cycling friends got a fancy schmancy new electric Porsche. We rode (bikes) together today, he drove over in his car and parked it in front of my house so it was there for a few hours while we were on our ride.

Mrs datlas said it got a lot of looks by people who happened to be nearby.

I still think the Saturn is better.

In Montana it’s legal to take home deer, elk, moose and antelope that you’ve hit with your car accidentally. You may not clean or dress it by the side of the road or sell the meat. You must also go on line and get a retroactive permit so the state can keep track of road kill. Makes total sense and saves the state money from not having to clear carcasses. The law was passed maybe 8 years ago and has been wildly popular. Opponents suggested people might strike those critters on purpose, which seemed like a dumb position considering the vehicle damage that would likely result.
