back when I was 17 that is how I rode... until one day in the middle of the day in the mid of summer in FL... I went outside and DAMN it was hot... ran inside and tossed my overshorts off... never went back...

I say NO to Clydesdales in Lycra. can you imagine those horses pulling the Budweiser wagon wearing Lycra? 
Seriously tho I say both Athena and Clyde cyclists should wear the cycling attire they think is comfortable and serves the purpose of making the ride enjoyable.

I don't wear lycra only because I haven't yet bought any cycling jerseys. But I promised myself that if I lost enough weight to where I can comfortably wear 1X T-shirts, I will finally buy myself a bicycle jersey. Not quite there yet but getting close. So in the meantime, I'll continue to ride in my gym shorts and polyester workout shirts.
I don't wear lycra only because I haven't yet bought any cycling jerseys. But I promised myself that if I lost enough weight to where I can comfortably wear 1X T-shirts, I will finally buy myself a bicycle jersey. Not quite there yet but getting close. So in the meantime, I'll continue to ride in my gym shorts and polyester workout shirts.

You guys are being awfully nice about it....
I don't know about other places, but around here the vast majority of bikers are 50+ and have a body to match. Almost everybody wears lycra no matter what they look like in it, its normal. I would much rather look like a whale in lycra then suffocate and rip my tender parts apart wearing jeans and a cotton shirt.

cycling shorts are a non negotiable option for me love2pedal.com has shorts for $20 and bibs for $10 more... it's worth at least trying them... sadly because of my strange proportions they didn't work for me and put the seam of the chamois right under my sit bone which was worse than going without... I ended up trying a few other brands and found the right pair with boure but costs over $100 but i'd tried enough pairs and talked to them about custom options to decide that it was worth it.

I wear cycling shorts and a jersey. As others have said it is functional. The shorts are padded and the jersey has pockets for keys, money, carrying the cyclometer into and out of the house and extra water bottles if I am doing a long ride, which will not be for a long time!!

I now ride with a looser fitting cycling jersey. Not baggy, but not skintight. I used to do the more form fitting gear, but that was 40 years and 70 pounds ago. Actually the slight fluttering in the wind makes me feel like I am going faster and feels more cooling...

Since I still need to loose some pounds for my old vintage wool shorts with chamois to fit, and the newer lycra shorts do not have the all way stretch of the merino wool, I wear the Rivendell MUSA shorts and revel in the 2 back and 2 side pockets. The lack of pockets was always a negative on cycling shorts for me. I have not had any binding or chafing complaints. I also do not need to worry about the stitching integrity of the panels (LOL).
My jerseys are a standard lycra full zip long sleeve, a standard lycra full zip short sleeve, and my favorites are 3 that look like collared short sleeve polo shirts with half zips, a chest pocket and the 3 back pockets, with both outside ones zippered and the center buttoned. 2 are lycra and one is a wool/lycra blend. I love the wool one.
Good wool cycling gear is not itchy or hot.

I wear them to get cars full of high school girls to cheer me on! And yes, that's a true story. I just hope my wife isn't coming home and gets distracted by seeing me on the road...as that would end poorly for me.

at 58 years old, and 220 lbs with a height of 5'9" I'm not exactly in shape, but I also don't really care to much how people think, I past that in life. I don't like huggy clothes, but I do where Lycra cycle pants, but I normally put on some light shorts over the top.. so as not to scare people . On top I where cycle shirts but my correct size and not Lycra, but other sports materials.. In General I don't like Lycra. Its for skinny's and that's fine. it suites them, but it hardly suites us Clydes. But wear what you want, and what yo are comfortable in..

I've about had a gut full of crap about what people should or shouldn't wear on a bike, what shoes, socks, matching kit, helmet. Whether our not you have a geeky helmet rear-view or any rear view, lights on bike or no, geeky reflectors, even shaved legs .....sheesh, I don't give two hoots in hell what anyone thinks.
Cyclists who look down their noses at others because of how they ride, what they ride, their clothing or acoutrements on the bike can pound sand.
I don't hang (nor ride) with those types of people, nor do I care to. Their opinions are of no concern of mine.
