Replace Al fork on 93 Trek 2200 Composite?
Hello all, i've recently started riding my 2200 composite trek more. It's one of trek's first forays into the Carbon tubing world. It's an aluminum frame with carbon main tubes and an aluminum fork. I was thinking of replacing the stock fork with an aftermarket carbon fork? I'm not trying to save weight as much as just increase ride quality. I love the bike and the fit but i'm just curious to see if there is anything i can do to improve it?
here she is in her latest form.. sorry for the NDS pic

I replaced the fork on my 2100 composite with a Tange cromo fork. Definite improvement in ride quality...

You could, but realistically you would need to convert the stem to threadless as well. I think I would recommend against it for this particular bike. Too much hassle for too little (if any) gain. It is what it is, an early carbon bike.
What's your tire clearance like? Going up one tire size if possible would do more for ride quality, and it would be less hassle. Also, different makes of tires can be vastly different WRT ride smoothness even at the same size.

It's hard to tell , but the joint where the downtube and headtube meet looks a little funny...

Noticed that too,...... Was the down tube re-glued on to the head tube at one time? It should not have all that stuff (glue?) coming out of the joint from the factory.

I assumed that was a zip tie for the wiring.

yes, zip tie for cadence computer.
I'm running 700x25 tires right now and i would like to keep them there, it has a 1 1/8 headtube and i happen to have a threadless headset and stem in my parts bin. I would probably just need the forks and spacers.
I've wanted to do this kind of conversion for awhile so that's pushing a bit as well. i don't mind spending 100 bucks on a new set of forks to make it happen.

Only reason to change out the original Al fork other than improving handling with a different rake is, it might ride a bit to harsh. I have three C&V bikes with Al lugged CF frames and Al forks, and they all don't seem to ride any harsher up front than all my steel bikes. Maybe if you go with a CF fork instead of steel, you might get more comfort because of the shock damping characteristics of CF.....

You may as well try it then. The what if of it will keep bugging you till you do... Sounds like a good research project at the least. Let us know how it works out.
