I really, really like this!! I've wanted a simple make-me-feel-like-a-kid-again single speed bike for several years now and I'm just putting the finishing touches on my build. I want my SS to be 26" wheels so I picked up a 1993 Rockhopper frameset. I want something a little more sporty than an old MTB but that's what is available for what I'm willing to pay. If this JYD came in a 26" version, I'd give serious consideration to buying one.

ZOOOOOOOMBIEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

So whats the build weight on these coming out to be? I found a frame, might pick it up and sell off my big block since I find myself wanting to changes to it leaning further and further toward a comfy cruiser. But I dont want to lug a monster up and down five flights everytime i go riding :/

I've never weighed mine, but I'm guessing the frame and fork will add about 3 or so pounds over what your Big Block sits at. Add another 2 pounds of so for tires if you're going for fat rubber, otherwise it will tend to be fairly similar in other parts.

Yeah, mine is NOT light, but also not very heavy. I have it built up with pretty quality parts and my guess is that it is in the mid 20's for weight? I race SSCX on it and my fat body slows me down more than the bike. It's fun. Buy it. You will never regret it.

The shop is trying to sell it for $790. Feels like way too much! What say you?

If a shop is selling for that much, I mean you have little choice. I bought mine at my LBS as they got the last frame in my size. They wanted $700. I offered $550 (retail I believe), 2 large pizzas, and a six pack of the mechanic's choice. They took that offer. One sold here in Seattle brand new for $625. But $790 is robbery. It is limited and cool, but no special steel or anything too unique, especially with a log lady as a new option.

That Junk Yard Dog is kinda a funky retro-modern-chameleon looking thing. Sort of hard to look at but hard to look away at the same time. I'd buy one for sure if I "needed" a new bike.

It reminds me of Russell Mitchell's bike from the old Biker Build-off show. A simplistic industrial looking bike:

Well negotiations have opened a $699. So im hopeful I may get it at a price I can justify. Im thinking I'll probably run 38mm road tires or BG Rock N Road on it, since what I'm after is a primarily road going fixed gear that I'm sure might see light trail use with mtb-ish geometry. What wheels do you think I would have to look for?

Well, the JYD might not be the frame you want if that's the idea. I run White Industries cranks and a 38t chainring as big as I am comfortable trying to get it to clear. I currently run H Plus Son TB14s laced to Chris King hubs with a Chris King 17t cog. I run Maxxis Minion's when I ride it as a MTB, and Compass Steilacooms when it is in SSCX mode. I previously ran Rock N' Roads and loved them, but gave them to my friend for his Nature Boy.

I honestly think you should consider a Nature Boy. I had one before the JYD and it handled most XC trails well. I had some wide flatbars on the NB and it was a blast. My JYD pretty much adopted all of the parts from the Nature Boy. $500 retail and no one is going to up that price.

I love my JYD but would never pay above retail for it.

*cough* pompino *cough* You could throw a carbon fork on a new frame for way less than $700.

All City JYD

I bought a med size JYD from a Trek store mechanic that I found hiding in the back. FYI, All City makes great mid level frame sets...its beautiful plus; the ride is very lively, segmented fork is compliant and is a good balance of quick n stable with 29 x 50 GK tires. I think the Log Lady with the 27.5 rims would be an even better design choice and is testament to the feedback they got from the JYD. I want to add a faster,
48 x16 geared- SS, steel frame road bike, short cockpit, 16.5" reach, with fast rollin g 32 width tires on light Wabi rims and drop bars. I realize I could do it to the JYD, but want another bike build. And yes I like the Wabi bikes, n Bens bike store offers the Orange frame as a complete bike built for them by Waterford...Any recommendations for a batch built niche frame in the 5 TO 800.00 dollar range for the frame.
