Howdy from Portland!

Hello. I usually just use these forums for research and entertainment, but I recently came across a great vintage Raleigh at a garage sale, and I thought it would be cool to share the bike's story with folks on the classic and vintage page. Otherwise, I've been riding, commuting, and working on bikes since I was a kid. I currently live in Portland, Oregon, where I'm probably one of very few contractors who commutes on a bike regularly. Actually, in this town there are probably a surprising number of bike-commuting contractors, but still, I feel pretty unusual in this regard. Thanks, everybody!

Good to have you onboard BikeForums. I have never been to Portland, but I know it ranks high in regards to bicycling/commuting. Be safe out there!

Yeah, Portland is a fun bike city. Plenty of cars, but at least nobody yells at you as they speed by!

I like the seasons. A little grey and soggy in the winter, but it’s over quick enough (some years). Bike culture is great. I thought I was a real bike nut, until I moved here. I’m only sorta nutty.

Been there and don't mind visiting occasionally, but too wet for me to be a year-round resident. Lots of bikes though.

Welcome! I went to the Portland Rose Festival when I was in the Navy. We had way too much fun in your fine city.

How do you carry your contracting tools? A trailer? I've observed a few purpose built trailers clearly being used to transport tools to worksites. Ambitious, especially in a rainy city like Portland. I live about 1 1/2 hours (by car) West of Portland and wish we had the bike friendly multi-use paths and driver awareness I see there.

Just came across a family photo, on a metal plate print! I guess my two wheeled roots go back over 100 years. My Grandfather, JJ:

Maybe around 1900?

Great pic!

I bought a cheap little truck a couple of years ago because I wanted better mpg. Then I realized I could just leave it at the jobsite and ride back and forth. It only works when I have jobs that are a few months long. When I have to carry tools for quick little jobs, I gotta drive. You don’t want to be the contractor who shows up on a bike and asks to borrow tools!

Welcome!! I live on the river in Slabtown. We just got a big, long stretch of protected bike lanes on Front and Naito--it is just awesome now!! They totally got rid of two lanes that used to be for vehicles. Now, it's for us.

And I was also wondering about your tools.
