Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It is believed that low heart rates (bradycardia) in high-mileage athletes such as yourself are due to virtually permanent cellular changes in the sinus node where the normal heart rhythm is generated. It doesn't go away when you get out of shape. Unfortunately, that 40 bpm puts you at some risk for "capture" of the electrical system of the heart by other generators, whose rhythms aren't as danceable. Doesn't matter where the bradycardia came from. That's one reason I'm not too unhappy with my crappy little heart with its 55 bpm (on a good day), now that I'm in my 60s.

So...Got my second recall notice for the 2017 Forester. The first one was for possible low transmission fluid during assembly. Apparently the Japanese robots were slacking off.

This one is for possible corrosion in the wire connections to the passenger seat weight sensor. Thing is, they don't have replacement parts yet. Subaru's interim workaround?: Limit the use of the front passenger seat.

It's probably not necessary, but you should do what they tell you.

I was thrilled when my cardiologist recorded 54 bpm. I learned then that my gp had been going through the motions for years, assuring me 80 bpm was normal. I knew it couldn't be that high. Now that the info is in the computer, she no longer goes through the motions; she doesn't check pulse rate at all. Instead she checks the four chambers of the heart.

Trying to reset my password on social security. It was good last week, but not now, or else the site's just ****ed up. I've been waiting for days for each page to load. The wait continues. Eventually it times out and I start over, getting a little further along each time.

I have a 1.5 hr break in my schedule, but I am too lazy to take the 10 min., mostly indoor, walk to the gym. Maybe a nice cup of tea instead.

Interesting. I retired in Sept. from a Post Office job where I walked an average of 15+ miles a day. Resting pulse was in low 40's. In a few months I had Afib, which led to a 24hr halter monitor where my pulse slowed to low 30's at night and stopped for 4 seconds at a time. Doc said time for a pacemaker. For some reason, maybe atrial flutter, ever since then, I can't even empty garbage cans in the house without breathing hard. Having an Ablation in early Jan. Reassuring that Indyfab's turned out well.

I finally sent an email to the embassy in DF. Those folks give better service than I have ever received in the US. Except for one instance. I was in an office, in Virginia, and my contact person was a native Spanish speaker. We conducted the entire interview in Spanish. He loved it. And gave me excellent service!

I had hoped to get a little running around done while the little girl was in preschool this morning, but the blowing snow and resulting traffic snarls put an end to that idea. I was very, very tempted to succumb to an hour of leisure, but I HTFUd and got in a quick trainer session.

Aside: man, that first interval of the session always makes me think, "yeah, maybe this isn't a good idea..."

Good luck with that.

15 miles/day ... carrying weight ... awesome.

I also agree. Holy crap, the refs are playing a major role in football games, and not in a good way.

I got excited about some holiday deals on a Garmin smartwatch/tracker. $150 ($250 retail) for something with GPS, ANT+/BT, 24/7 heart rate monitoring, sleep monitoring, etc, etc.

And then I saw that Garmin went and artificially hobbled the damn thing and doesn't let it communicate with power meters because that would eat in to their $500+ watches. See, these are the reasons that I Wahoo.

My cardiologist says that I have a well-developed athletic heart and should be proud that at 68, it's doing so well. He also says that I ride more miles per year than he puts on his car.

Then, he informs me that I have to wear a monitor for 7 days to get a better record of my arrhythmia and make sure those 37-39 heart beats are regular and such.
