Having been there once, I figured that turning 33 twice would make me wiser and be less painful on the body. This year certainly proved me wrong.

I just became official in October. AARP is just now getting around to sending me junk mail to remind me.

Well, being only 50-54, and inexperienced in life and decision making, it takes this cohort a while to catch on. But, it appears that more have gotten around to reading the thread, and after a lot of hesitant pondering, have decided to check the 50-54 entry. However, the 55+ group seems alert, decisive and able to make decisions quickly and appropriately.

I seem to be getting older, the only way I can tell is I more annoyed at the "not older better" and XX yeas young type of stuff. IF age is a stae of mind, then I must be insane.

Polling is a bit of a science, and it often reveals as much about the polling process itself, than it does about what you are trying to find out. You (and I for that matter) were expecting to see a distribution that looked like the upper percentile range of a Bell Curve. Didn't happen that way. One thing I would look at is the age distribution of the population as a whole.

The US is getting older, while there is a very pronounced "youth bulge" in much of the third world.

Another factor to consider is the number of <50 respondents. A reasonable assumption (that would have to be tested of course), is that most respondents in this particular forum would be the ones it is aimed at, i.e. 50 plusers. The 50-54 demographic in BF may consist of a fair amount in that age group who are putting off admitting to it, therefore, not visiting 50+ until they are ready to own up to it.

Good thought, but I prefer the "50-54 crowd just isn't as bright as the older folks" theory.

Of course. But we're smarter than you *were* when you were 50-54.

Probably so - but that was 23 years ago, and I can't remember that far back.

will be 62 in February... in my head I feel really young. This weekend did a long, difficult mountain bike ride (in the actual mountains) and Sunday another ride so today my knees are achy and my back won't bend... so my body reminds me I am old! darn...

58 tomorrow - I'm in the most populous range of responders. Feel I've been getting younger the last couple of years, primarily due to my obsession with cycling.

I'll get out of this childish 50-54 crowd next year... in the mean time, this is by far the best I've felt in the last 20 years. And obviously I'm much smarter now, as I only have one teenager left around the house to tell me how dumb I am!

OTOH, and seriously, I would have expected much more of a drop off associated with age after 50 - death, morbidity, loss of interest. One take would be that, for whatever reason, the 50+ is not attracting the 50-54 cohort (as you implied above).

+1.

I've been called a grumpy old man for so long it wasn't until the poll that I realized with the legal definition of age, I didn't meet the description of the group...

Not surprising. I read somewhere that statistically, in a room of only 30 people, there is close to a 100% probability that two people in that room will share a birthday. Anybody care to do the math? (They won't necessarily share YOUR birthday (so it's not a 29 in 365 chance), but there will be two people who share A birthday.)
