How hard would it be swap my Mechanical 105 for Hydro?

Hey Folks!

I recently bought a 2018 Fuji Cross 1.7 that has mechanical Shimano 105 with TRP Spyre disc brakes. The bike is perfect for commuting purposes now but I am thinking of trying my hand at racing cross and I'm thinking it would make sense to upgrade the shifters & calipers to hydraulic for more stopping power.

From my research, it looks like all I would need to do is purchase a set of the shifters and flat-mount brake calipers and I'd be off to the races. Other than needing to upgrade the cabling to hydraulic, is there anything else I should consider to make sure this is compatible?

I would consider upgrading to the Ultegra set like these: https://www.merlincycles.com/shimano...SABEgLBDvD_BwE

Thanks for your help!

Assuming your 105 is the latest 11-spd groupset, updating the brifters, adding calipers, and brake hoses are all that's needed. Just double-check RE: flat mount vs post mount calipers.

Also need a bleed kit. The one you want is Shimano part number TL-BT03-S.
An extra set of pads wouldn't hurt either. The RS-805 calipers come with L02A resin pads but you could go with L04C metal pads. They might last longer in the dirty environment of CX racing.

Rather than do an upgrade now, ride a few races. You may find you need to upgrade more than the brakes (maybe the whole bike), you may find you don't like racing, you're most likely to find that you need to upgrade yourself before any mechanical changes become relevant.

Cyclo Cross Racing , a back up bike is good, buy N+1...

while you learn the riding and dismount skills , and have cheap er fun go for the single speed races ..
crashing while learning on a derailleur bike is expensive..

But you are likely a Googleaire, to live in SF anyhow.

What do you guys think of those hybrid brakes - mechanical levers and cables but hydro calipers?

Any good?
