Cannondale mystery frame - 1994 M700

I stumbled into this NOS Cannondale frame on FB - seller was local to my parents and my dad picked it up. There’s been some debate about what it is since there is no Model number - one suggestion is a warranty frame and another is a special order that never was picked up. Either way, I grabbed it and will be building it up for myself. I'm prettu sure it's a 1994 and size is roughly 16.5".

I'm debating one of two directions..
  1. nice vintage parts (XT/XTR stuff... I know a guy) and take time hunting down the right parts for the build (game of chess)
  2. modern stuff that fit me better (165mm modern crank that supports 2x or even go 1x) set- guys in the car world call them restomods - additions are made in the spirit of the original but modern parts improved over time
Next goal is to clean up the frame/fork and admire the shine then hunt down a good (threaded?) 1 and 1/8" 1.25" headset.

I don’t think you could lose either direction you take it. Maybe do some XTR stuff (rear derailleur for
starters) but customize the rest to fit you.

Thanks for the suggestion! The XTR M980 is uber sweet for sure. The XT M780 looks to be a good value and the XT M8000 is definitely one louder than the X780. I have a few items on the ebay watch list.

Looks like it’s gonna be a fun build! My vote is restomod but you really can’t go wrong either way. I think good deals can be found for 1 1/8” threaded headsets since they’re not in very high demand.

Made in March 1994 and frame code is 3L5W16.

I’m confident the 16 is the size but not sure about the rest.

Well, it is definitely aluminum! I found "4097" stamped in the upper portion by the hand written number but nothing else.

I just sent Cannnondale customer support an inquiry... now we wait.

Looks like the M series from 1994 came with the Dia Compe Aheadset: https://www.profileracing.com/produc...aheadsetn-o-s/

NOTE - Fork is 1.25" steer tube and the linked item won't work

I've spent some time reviewing the 1993 and 1994 product catalogs on vintage-cannondale. There were two blue color options at that time - indigo blue pearl and cobalt blue pearl. I'm putting my money on indigo blue pearl as the color of this frame. Looks like the (pepperoni?) fork is intended to be set up as threadless headset.

Could this be an M800 "Beast from the East" frame in a custom color?

Hmm, 1.25" threaded!!! Very interesting.

Most of the 1.25 that I've seen were threadless. Not sure who made/makes headsets in that configuration.

What is the inner size of the steerer? That may be a weird size to find a quill/threadless adapter for.

What is the inner size of the headtube (for fitting the headset race/cone)?

Let us know what you end up using for this setup.
