How long do I have to wait before US Postal Jersey becomes cool to wear?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So let me get this straight, you're comfortable wearing tight lycra shorts, shoes which make you walk like an egret, a helmet that would not look out of place in a sci fi movie and shave your legs but having US Postal on your jersey you're not sure about?

In a fit of madness I bought a Cervelo jersey to go with my new R3SL a few weeks ago.

I don't think I'll be wearing it in public, except at night, maybe...

A few years back, USA Cycling had a fire sale here in town. I picked up two USPS jackets, three skin suits and a jersey for $10 each. The leg holes on the skin suits are made for The Hulk, so I had to take those in, but they keep me warm on winter rides/commutes. Too bad I've lost 20 lbs since and the XL's I bought are now a little big. Really don't care what people think - for $60 I'm outfitted for a few years.

I can only think of three reasons to wear a professional/replica jersey.

1) I am on the team, therefore I earned it.

2) I bought it, therefore I earned it.

3) Someone gave it to me, therefore someone thought I deserved it.

There may be more times when it is appropriate, but I would think carefully about wearing it if it doesn't fit into one of the above categories.

It won't be cycling cool until Lance has retired for 15-20 years, or some time after his death. Which it is may depend on what he does after retirement. A political career will not speed the process of giving USPS gear retro appeal.

Or if he's convincingly and spectacularly outed as a cheat and a fraud and his empire crashes around him. Then you can wear it for the irony thing.

You might not have to wait that long anyway. I think it would be cool to wear when USPS goes out of business.
