We'll have an ambulance standing by.

I only run worn out tires with the cord showing and remove every other spoke to save as much weight as I can

Screw that - take the front wheel off and wheelie up the hill if you really want to save weight.

Okay, I agree with the 7:00AM roll-out/click-in since it well be toasty on the mountain by Sunday. Bring two large bottles and maybe a Camelback to stay hydrated!

Will spread the word to my road climbing friends.

As a result of heat concerns Team Unlikely Cyclist has decided to call off our ride up GMR on 6/30 in the interest of safety for our team members.

Anyone who chooses to ride - please be safe

Agreed Vic,

I'm going to ride it anyway. Two large frozen (at the start, anyway) bottles and I should be fine. I can get ice in the bottles at Mt.Baldy Lodge for the ride back.

I'll be in touch, as I probably will too.

I gotta go pick up the Subie from the body shop in Ridgecrest (from the deer strike) on Saturday, but I should be available Sunday. Baldy will be warm (ok ... hot) but should be doable.

Hey BG05, can you help me understand this business with the heat? And some of you other weather experts, feel free to chime in.
I just checked the hourly forecast for Glendora (zip code 91741) and here is what it looks like:
7:00 AM - 73F
8:00 AM - 76F
9:00 AM - 81F
10:00 AM - 85F
From Boulder Springs to the shack is about 9 miles. A brisk walk is about 4 mph. If we assume that one starts at 7:00 AM and climbs a tad faster than a brisk walk, he/she should be at the shack by 9:00 when the temperature will be a pleasant 81F. Even the decent won't get any toastier than 85F. Or is low 80s reason for concern? Boy, if so, people in SoCal should stay indoors 8 months per year.

Hey Rick, I said I'll make an honest attempt to be there at 7:00 AM. How successful this attempt will be, only time will tell. But sure as heck, I'll be there!

I've ridden GMR on very hot days. Could I do it? Yes. That being said the forecast can be wrong in either direction. Ask Tojan Horse about faulty weather forecast with heat. My first ride it was "supposed" to be about 77 when we reached the shack it was more like 91. Is that horrific? No but I'm not slender...I'm an Athena and so am carrying more weight up the mountain than some.

Have also ridden in hotter temps with road closed due to fire hazard (actually was a fire ongoing up in mountains) and that was pure misery. I don't ride my bike to be THAT miserable.

I don't feel like a wimp for my teams decision to wait for better temps as we have some ladies on team with health concerns that require more prudent thinking. We don't have to ride it to show anyone how tough we are.

I may ride up tomorrow as well - if so, I would start at 7 at the latest. I'm pretty slow on the hills but I can generally get to Baldy in 2 1/2 hours or so. If it is crazy hot at that point, may just descend to Upland and take Foothill back, mostly downhill. I think there is a drinking fountain near the forestation - and the vending machine near the lodge has water and powerade - just in case they aren't open (on the 4th anyway)

Ugh. Brought the rental back, and now the car won't be done until Tuesday.

Guess I'm riding local. Gonna miss that 100+ heat. lol

Hear hear... I've ridden in hot weather and know I can do it as well but I don't like it, I usually end up dehydrated and it's not really fun. I wish I was like Rick and others who are so fit that climbing or heat is not a bother... "not much over 100..." means I stayed in doors this morning and afternoon (hey my house is clean and my yard raked up!) and will get out this evening to do a short ride, hopefully to beat the heat".

I did ride yesterday but on the mountain bike on a trail is that basically tree covered so wasn't bad at all but after the ride the heat came up and I had to get indoors.

Now give me 30 - 40 degree weather and I am in heaven!!!

Hi Pam, I was hoping to see you on the combined BCI, OCW and OCRR ride yesterday but you decided to go mountain biking instead. It was a good ride, I did the 52 miles one. Very fast with a couple of good climbs (Vista Del Lago and Pacific Island Drive) plus lots of smaller climbs at all a pretty fast speed (for me); here is the Garmin from it: https://connect.garmin.com/activity/334988433

There was good representation from all three clubs, plus a Subway lunch afterward.

Both today and yesterday were a tad on the toasty side, but not bad as long as we stayed hydrated.

Today on GMR/GRR it was JimmyNH and Linda Adams.

Linda didn't do the OCW, BCI, OCRR ride yesterday, but Jimmy did so we were both a bit slower than usual due to not being recovered from that one!

Rick / OCRR
