John Kerry riding in the french Alps
We know that John Kerry loves to ride, but what is amazing is the amount of support he is getting, at least fifteen "official" motorcycles as well as cars/SUVs, one ambulance and apparently an helicopter.
He was riding the Pass of the Colombière close to Switzerland.
The video is a little below his picture! The voices are expressing their amazement at the amount of support!

The day of someone in his position being able to go out for a quiet ride is long gone -- if it ever existed. I seem to remember the Secret Service would shut down Rock Creek Park early in the day for Reagan to get his walk in.
Just out of curiosity, how many of those vehicles are support or security, and how many do you think are papparazi?

I doubt that any were paparazzi. There may possibly have been one car with authorised photographers, but unlikely that unauthorised vehicles would have been allowed near.
Good for Kerry that he still makes time to ride, but sad that it isn't possible without all this expense and hassle. Understandable, but still sad.

You can tell the official cars by their colors or lack there of (black) there must be some that are decoy as well--possibly. It has to be unnerving for the locals in small villages. Somebody wrote on the french bicycle website "vélo101" that there was 3 helicopters as well--but I am not so sure?
But for a 74 year old is an inspiration particularly after a broken hip and such busy/intense schedule. Although if he were in need of help he would have no problem since he speaks french!

I don't care for Kerry, or most of his politics, and yet...I have to admire his drive to keep riding at 74. On one hand the cost of SAG (Support anf Gear) has got to be up there, on the other hand, he married into wealth, and if he helps defray the cost then good for him. I say, retire now and go cycling everyday! (Or just retire...)

He is third in line to be President of the United States and is privy to top secret military information. Like him or not, he deserves to be protected by virtue of the office he holds.
I'm sure Vladimir Putin would love to run into him while changing a flat tire alone on some deserted mountain pass.
I'm no fan of the current administration but some of you guys are too much. You would complain if he was on Zwift in his basement with a patrol car in front of his house.

Third or fouth, it doesn't change the fact that he holds an office worthy of protection.

He probably has that much protection whether he's riding his bike, or riding in a limo, or eating at a cafe. I don't think his bike rides require a budget increase.

As far as the spending goes, how do we know there was any additional cost beyond what's normally spent to protect the SoS? I doubt there's much of a cost increase for his rides.

I was able to witness Bush visiting Minneapolis after the I-35W bridge fell. 2 747s, 4 helis including a couple of Super Stallions to ferry him, officials and press from airport to the site. Then there were 15 vehicles to bring him from the heli landing site to the site of the collapsed bridge so he could say, "People is hurting". Reverse process. Itwas worth it. I got to watch the Super Stallion take off and fly over my head! That part was cool.

Actually Trek was quite supportive of Bush and his bike and what he used it for.

I think he needs the support, wasn't he the one that went for a bike ride during some negotiations in Europe and wound up breaking his leg in a crash?

At least he looks like a rider, unlike another person in the Administration...Can you say, "Dork with helmet on Trek."?
I agree, he'd have most of that support with him riding or not. The support gets paid sitting around or hanging out with him. And he's fit for his age, glad he's able to still get out.
