Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It does happen!!!!

The police do pay attention!

About a month ago I was on a group ride and we had an incident with a motorist. The police were called and they felt is was worthy of a charge. We all had to give statements about what occurred and I just got word that the driver was charged with Dangerous Driving, which is a criminal code offense and not a highway traffic offense...

I'll keep you guys posted on what the outcome is...

Report the bad drivers! It does pay...

If you follow the history of the Dr in California who slammed on his brakes in front of 2 cyclists (https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=595074) causing them to crash into the back of his car, a key point was that another cyclist had reported him for the same action a couple of months before. When the accident first happened the authorities sounded iffy about charging him until the previous incident became known.

Moral of the story is to capture the plate info of dangerous drivers and report them.

Before you all go patting us Canadians on the back, an arrest is different than a conviction and a conviction doesn't mandate a tough penalty. Canada is a very liberal country and goons like this will walk pretty easily. It does cause inconvenience to them though so they may think before acting next time. Good job, always call the cops if you can.

Agreed, but that's still one step ahead of us. One thing to add about the US is the printed penalties are usually much higher than what is actually sentenced. I think we look tougher on paper than we are in reality.

I got pulled over today for not signaling a lane change because I went from the shoulder to the left lane so I could turn left. I looked behind me and no one was there why would I take my hand off the handlebars?
It's a trend for police to hate cyclists. At least in my town.

You didn't signal and it's a bad cops. If you want to use the road, you have to follow the rules of the road.

Slightly related, do they have to give you an allowance for safety? For example, I don't signal when slowing or stopping for a turn because you can't signal and apply the front brake at the same time. Instead, I signal for about 1 second before I apply the brake, then apply the brake.

I was going downhill with the wind on my back. At least 30mph. Why would I risk losing balance? Our roads are broken to hell.

I don't know what the law technically requires, I'm sure it varies in each jurisdictions. I do exactly like you and show intention. So far that's been enough to keep me from traffic tickets, except for speeding down a hill, but nobodies perfect .
