The derailleurs, brifters and triple crankset are an upgrade from the OEM components. The frame and possibly many of the other components are late 1980s. The single pivot brakes are definitely older. The front and rear wheels are mismatched. The middle chainring is worn out and will need replacing. That's a sign that the chain and cassette may also need replacing and that it probably requires a complete overhaul. Add into that the cost of a new rear tyre and bar tape and you're probably looking at a around $100 in parts alone. It could still be a good deal but warrants close inspection before purchase.

T-Mar, everyone, at the risk of revealing my ignorance, how would one best inspect the brifters? For example, would you just test ride the bike and see whether it shifts well? Instead, are there any tell tale signs to look for?

Yes, always test ride a local sale bicycle. It will reveal so much more than a visual inspection, when it comes to shifting, braking and general ride characteristics. It's also a great excuse for having to adjust the post and stem, to see if they are seized.

So, I test rode it yesterday. Nice frame, smooth ride.

The hubs (1 hub is a Tiagra) are mismatched as well as the wheels. In addition, the shifting is clunky. The chain came off at one point. I called my LBS and described the issue-they said “You probably just need a shifting tune up, bring it in - $30 bucks”.
Do we think that’s possible?

So, I told the seller I’d think about it (she said she thinks the parts alone are worth the $200, lol). I’m just not qualified to know whether it truly needs only a shifter adjustment or expensive repairs. I’d appreciate your thoughts. Noob questions, I know! Thanks!
