Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I wasn't a serious Cyclist in 1976. Things haven't changed much. That was before my prime.
I'm just a ute.

Maybe not at the full-service station in Sharpsburg, but everywhere else it has.

My first and only family vacation trip was to Yellowstone Nat'l Park in June of my 11th or 12th year. First time seeing mountains (wonderful), enjoying temps in the 70s at midday in the summer (good), and experiencing food without seasoning (really not good). Also, my first time experiencing real snowfall...in June. Did the rubes from Louisiana bring coats? No, no we did not.

Uniglide? I've modified modern 'Hyperglide' cassettes to run on an old 600 hub and it was super easy. I miss that hub, it was virtually silent when coasting. A ~4 hour period spent riding in the rain ruined the driveside bearing races though

A lot of people don’t understand how cold it can get there during what they think should summer weather back home. Rode through there in ‘00. Woke up the second morning at Grant to frost on the ground in late-June. Altitude plays a role. Old Faithful sits at over 7,000’. It’s higher than all the passes I crossed in Montana on my way there. Craig Pass, SE of Old Faithful, is over 8,000’.

We're having cooler than normal temperatures also. Highs in the mid to upper 80s.

I have given thought to doing that. I just haven't gotten to it. Thanks for the reminder. Now that I'm riding again, and the blood is flowing again, I find I'm not content to pass the day reading.
What kind of file did you use?

In '74? we drove from Wyoming to Montana, over the pass(I can't remember the names of the places anymore) on July 4. It was over 100°A on both sides and five feet of snow on top. We were northern California boys at the time, so were used to snow.

I can't remember exactly, probably a combination of a few smaller ones from a cheap set I have.

The metal was much softer than I expected.

That reminds me of the time we visited Paris in July and we couldn’t get over how cold it was. We kept asking natives if this was normal and kept getting the answer “yep, pretty much”. We had to go buy jackets. The other shock was how late sunset was . . . it was still light at 10 PM . . . and the restaurants were still serving dinner.
