Recommend me a carbon single speed frame for an upgrade?

I have an early 80's cro-mo road frame (a Zebra) I've ridden as a fixed gear for about 9 years now, with some nice upgrades- actually the only original thing is the frame! I'd like to switch the parts over to a carbon frame (or at least aluminum) as a single speed, so I want the rear drilled for a brake. I like the look of the short-lived Trek District Carbon, for example.

Ideally I'm looking for 1" threadless headset for the carbon fork I have, 26.8 seatpost, 68x103 mm BB. Seems like unless I want steel, everything's 1 1/8" now, so I'd be willing to compromise there. Same thing on the seatpost if it's a good frameset.

I'd be using this for recreational, faster rides, not track/racing/commuting, etc.

Any recos?

Building a bike around a 1" threadless fork seems a bit silly.

Finding a carbon frame with that requirement may be difficult. The Colossi Al Colossione is aluminum and has a 1" head tube.

What's the fork behind all this trouble?

You can pair a 1 1/8 frameset with a 1 inch fork with a chris king devolution headset. Expensive though.

As I mentioned, I'd compromise on the 1" fork (the one I have is full carbon, from Performance), as long as I could get the new frame with a good fork and headset. Of course, then I'd have to change the stem- one thing always leads to another with updates....

Oh gotcha.

Check out the:

Leader EQNX

Word on the street is that cinelli has a full carbon track bike in the works right now.

I'd go with a frame/fork matched set if you're going with Carbon Fiber. Any frame that takes a 1" threadless fork will be about 20 years old. Still possible, but your selection will be limited, and you will probably have to deal with vertical dropouts.

Is the Trek District belt drive?

What is your budget for a full carbon bare frame?

Searching E-Bay for "Carbon Track Frame", one comes up with a few Chinese frames around $600 including shipping.

There is a Felt for $1650.

A Stradalli for $900

It looks like a search for "Carbon Fixed Gear" pulls up a few different frames, with less radical designs.

Thanks, the Leader looks promising, though pricey. The thing about the Chinese ebay stuff is, you don't know what you're getting- that's why I ask for reco's. Many carbon track frames aren't drilled for a rear brake, and it's often not advisable, either.

Is the bike for racing, or use as a commuter?

If you order the frame direct from a Chinese manufacturer, not from E-Bay, some customization might be possible such as specifying the brake bridge. Hopefully reinforced.

I can't say about the longevity.

That Felt TK1 posted from the bay isn't drilled for a front or rear brake. None of the TK series are rear drilled either.

Hmmm
The last Chinese CF frame posted above did have front and rear brakes.

This FABike looks pretty unique.
Long-term test: Flexible FABike Carbon Road and Trail Bike - Bikerumor

I think the bare frame runs about €2.390 / $2,490, so not quite bargain basement.

But, it comes with a lot of configuration options.

Planet X makes a nice full carbon track frameset. It's not designed to accept a rear brake though. It seems like the Leader or china carbon from ebay are about the only options if you want to run front and rear brakes.

Edit: If you only want to run single speed and never fixed, you could also find a carbon road bike frame with vertical dropouts and run a chain tensioner.

I've been tempted to get a "chinese" carbon road frame and convert it to fixed gear with an Eno hub. I have converted my old Cannonade 3.0 and CAAD4 and really like them. I use my fixed gear just like a regular road bike so normal geometry and water bottle braze ons are a requirement. I haven't seen any carbon track frames that would work for me. Something like a carbon Langster or Capo type bike would be perfect.
